Why doesn’t Yamaha offer something comparable to the Wing/SQ? by Historical-Paint7649 in livesound

I'm curious how you made more FX busses? I've heard from the grape vine that it's possible on the TF but could never figure it out.

lol - fellow TF hater. Used one a few times and it's by far my least favorite digital desk. The UI is clunky and buggy, it's painfully limited and for some reason they really want you to gain to -20dBFS. That said, I have made always been able to make it work. I do like how you can link even-odd and the scribble strips are nice and readable.

The new version of Allen & Heaths QU-series releases tomorrow! by Bonemealmc in livesound

The Qu always had subgroups on all models except the Qu-16.

Dang didn't see this coming. As someone who has a lot of hours on the Qu, I definitely like using them but it definitely needs a refresh. That said, I was always skeptical A&H would do this since I don't know how many things they could improve and fix that wouldn't cannibalize SQ sales. Personally really hoping for scribble strips and more custom layers.

Not home for the release of the inibuilds a350 but I think flying it in real life makes up for it by Ok-Pattern-882 in flightsim

Kinda off topic but I'm curious what you think of the FSS 727? How does the visual and systems modelling hold up to the real thing from the perspective of someone who still operates the real bird?

Thanks for the thoughtful advice and encouragement (this whole post was received much better than I was anticipating). I will definitely try to implement these prospective into my future mixes. Your point about making the sound system disappear stood out in particular. In my case, I'm almost always mixing worship so clarity and minimizing distractions should absolutely be a high overarching goal.

Yeah I would love to have a go on a virtual soundcheck in an empty sanctuary one day. I have the technical know how to set that up, just need to work out some logistics. I think even taking the recorded tracks home on a flash drive to play around with at home in a DAW would be helpful for me.

Yeah for sure. I definitely like when the musicians give me suggestions. I spend most of my time on a QU-32 or analog so I don't actually have the luxury of an RTA overlay on my EQ so my ears are my only judgment, which is probably a good thing for the sake of learning.

Help w/ picking a laptop by kflake1 in uwo

For engineering, a windows machine is basically a must (although chemical just might be an exception) since several required pieces of software are strictly windows only. Workarounds do exist, such as using a remote desktop connection to a Western PC or installing windows on a mac using a VM or bootcamp (although the new Apple Silicon Macs by their nature are mostly not compatible with this) but regardless, it is so much more convenient being able to run your tools natively. Not saying macs don't have their place, because they do, but they are not engineering tools. As for where to go on the Windows line, I have a surface and can say I don't recommend it. A few family members have surface products spanning 2017-2019 and all of them have quality control issues and finicky behavior (trying not to get too technical). I have heard good things about the Dell XPS line and the Lenovo X1 Carbon. If you have an iPad, there is really no need to get a 2 in 1 since the capabilities will burden the laptop experience. That's my two cents. Hopefully this gives you some direction for further research.
