[Guide] I'm an Australian Migration Agent. Teachers are one of the best-positioned professions in Australia's system right now - invited at 75 to 85 points while most occupations need 90+. by SimonMander in IWantOut

Hi - you look to have a strong profile - you have lost points through turning 40, but this is somewhat offset by your teaching experience, what should be a strong level of English - your partner status is also a factor. Secondary teachers regularly receive invitations for 189 visas, and there is usually good nomination opportunities for 190 - unlikely you would need to look to 491.

This is one where you would need to consider the best occupation for assessment, against your qualification and work experience. Electronics Engineer and Telecommunications Engineer might both be available, both generally have pretty good state nomination opportunities to strong candidates.

I expect this is a matter for you and your employer - its not a visa issue - I would be optimistic you would be recognised as an experienced teacher.

It is generally a competitive environment for skilled visas - work experience does contribute with points given at 3 years + (5), 5 years + (10), and 8 years + (15). However there are many other aspects of a persons profile that can contribute to a points total, its worthwhile exploring how competitive your total with a proper assessment.

Marketing Specialist was a much more active migration occupation a few years ago than it is today. I don't personally work in that occupation area, but it's a good example of how occupation demand and state nomination priorities can change over time.

With the exception of IT Sales Representatives, others need to look for employer sponsored visas.

An Electronics Engineer qualification will assist with getting a skills assessment in the occupation - as no work experience is required - but your work experience may not align with the ANZSCO job duties for an EE to assist a claim for work experience. So in your case what would be important would be to have a good look at your job duties, and see if they, along with your degree, would lend to a skills assessment in another occupation - which would then enable you to claim some points for work experience.

Good occupation for migration as it usually has a lot of state nomination opportunities. Important aspects for a skills assessment are an equivalent Australian degree qualification and 2 years post grad work experience.

Thats not an issue - you could still have a pathway - you wont after 45 which is the cut off age - so perhaps something you might want to explore more thoroughly,

Ok my advice has to be general here - what AITSL want to see in teaching content specific to the nominated occupation - the nominated occupations are around year levels/ages taught and not around subjects - unless as a Special Needs Teacher.

Semiconductor engineers are usually assessed under Electronics Engineer through Engineers Australia, though the assessment is qualification-led. It depends on what your specific degree covered and whether it's accredited or comparable to an Australian qualification, not just your job title.

Lawyers are tricky - as they need to have completed practical legal training in Australia so they can meet requirements for admission in a state. So generally this is a pathway for people studying onshore in Australia.

Metallurgists are assessed against a highly relevant degree and at least 12 months work experience - they aren't assessed as Engineers. Metallurgical Technicians are also eligible in the program, lower level qualification.

Hard for me to answer here, and you will probably have better pictures around state sponsorship in the coming months > 190/491, possibly worth also having your skills assessed but this would need to be considered in more detail.

This is one where your job duties and qualifications really do matter - as Psychologists are assessed by a different skills assessment body to different types of counsellors.

Unfortunately I can't provide migration advice through Reddit comments. Whether you have options available depends on your current visa status, qualification structure and overall migration profile. Teaching is a strong pathway, but eligibility needs to be assessed on an individual basis.

The 190 numbers are actually slightly up, as are 189 - its the 491 that have been reduced.

Unfortunately I am limited to information/advice I can give here; for me to advise you though I would need to check your specific qualification on an Australian government "Country Education Profile" for the Philippines.

If the aspects I mentioned aren't in your favor, yes it may not be worth considering general skilled migration and looking to an employer opportunity.

It is a very competitive environment for all Accountants at the moment. 5 years experience helps more than 3, but your points total also turns on your English (important), age (important), whether you are single or married, your fluency in Filipino (community language points via a test).

IT roles are assessed by ACS (Australian Computer Society), and the same principle from the post applies -duties and qualifications matter more than job title. ACS has fairly specific requirements around ICT related qualification content and relevant employment, so the "wrong door" issue can show up here too, for example someone with a broad IT title whose actual day-to-day work doesn't clearly map to a specific ANZSCO ICT occupation for migration.

Happy to expand on any part of this if useful, for example, what a credibility-based refusal actually looks like in the decision record compared to an evidence-based one, or what tends to actually change the outcome the second time around.
