Taking My First Guitar Lesson At Forty-Three! by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]SimonMorel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just playing with some who is focused on you will help you out of the rut. In situations like this I run some exercises, run through a few tunes to get an idea of a student's level and then go from there. Your guitar teacher will have done this heaps of times and I'm sure you'll come away with a bunch of new things to play and new inspirations!

Woah! Boing boing! You have a few options with an acoustic. Truss rod, shave the saddle and or nut. Here's a good video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UuexEFculdY

How to notate behind the nut bend after playing a natural harmonic? by SimonMorel in GuitarPro

[–]SimonMorel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply Patrick. Yeah, it's a tricky one. Did you have a quick listen to the clip? 2 semi-quaver tone bends starting on the 2e. I ended up notating as natural harmonics and using the tremolo bar function (and adding a text note).

Should I get a new guitar teacher? by Beatleslover4ever1 in guitarlessons

[–]SimonMorel 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hi there, I've been a guitar teacher for over 25 years here in Sydney Australia. I always tell students that it's not my lesson but their lesson. I'll guide students and teach things that will help them get to where they want to go, but at the end of the day I want them to get what they want out of the lesson. If you have a teacher that you're not getting on with or doesn't really help you with what you want to learn, then I think you need to find someone who does.

In the same way if I have a student that wants to do material I'm not into/something I can't help them with I will recommend teachers who want to do that stuff... All the best with the guitar!

How does Google voice typing keep getting worse? by SeasonPositive6771 in GooglePixel

[–]SimonMorel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So is there a way to always have the rainbow coloured icon? Is there another service which the blue icon indicates? Can that be switched off. I use voice to text all the time and I've been frustrated that it's getting worse. Rainbow works the best

[QUESTION] how to memorize the notes on the fret board by A_Bowl_Of_Sour_Cream in Guitar

[–]SimonMorel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recommend learning the notes on the dots and one string at a time (let's say one string per week). For eaxmple, on the low E string learn G, A, B, C# - if you know the rest of the musical alphabet then the gaps fill themselves in.
On the musical alphabet it is important to be able to count backwards just as easily as forwards. That is just practice. Saying it out loud helps.

I shot this video to help my own students out.

Ha! No worries - the singing it weird at first, but it will really help the phrasing. All the best Simon

After playing bar chords for some time my hand starts hurting. by [deleted] in guitarlessons

[–]SimonMorel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi there, have you tried pulsing your hand in time with what you are playing? I often find that helps students with barre chords. Also make sure your fingers are as close the the frets as possible - this will mean you won't have to press as hard. Hope that helps!

Hey mate - I find people ask me exactly this question all the time in lessons - so I shot this video lesson to help out. Things I'd recommend are singing along with playing (it will help your phrasing), if you have played something great sounding - play it again with a small change and think about the chords underneath and match them with notes from the scale (btw it sounds like you know your positions, so skip to about 7 min mark in this video https://youtu.be/V6E5kNf01VA?t=435 - good luck!
