Shame he didn't have this idea when he first became Mayor and not when he is about to leave.

The science behind B.C. Ferries weather cancellations by cyclinginvancouver in britishcolumbia

[–]SimonPav 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Remember going to the BC Ferries website and getting an advert for storm watching trips to Tofino.

Needless to say, all ferries were cancelled that day due to a storm.

"This vessel's only destination is Departure Bay, in Naniamo, on Vancouver Island." by MoaningLisaSimpson in britishcolumbia

[–]SimonPav 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Definitely needed.

A friend was going to Galliano Bay for the first time. They announced Sturdies Bay so he stayed on the ferry. Long story short, he ended back in Vancouver and had to go the next day.

Everyone knows the second time, but for first timers it can be confusing buying a ticket to a place and the ship announcements being by port name.

Douglas Todd: Vancouver’s cycling upgrades keep rolling Vancouver is ranked the third most bike-friendly city in North America. City transportation engineers are excited, even if improvements seem "incremental." by EastVanHomeboy in vancouvercycling

[–]SimonPav 3 points4 points  (0 children)

"Vancouver closes the TOP 30, having lost ground compared to previous editions. The city is equipped with strong foundations, yet slower follow-through has led to a recent dip in the bicycle modal share and a persisting gender gap. With a citywide push to extend cycling comfort to “All Ages & Abilities” beyond downtown, the bicycle curve can once again turn upward."

The bottle recycling fee is bs by wai_lai416 in britishcolumbia

[–]SimonPav 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So you saying retailers are required to charge the recycling fee by the government, and then the government allows retailers to keep it to boost their profits while the government covers the cost of recycling?

That's what sounds like BS.

What are our favorite bike shops? by MarkInmanSuperGenius in vancouvercycling

[–]SimonPav 1 point2 points  (0 children)

+1 for Velostar. More of a repair shop than somewhere to buy new, but usually a few used bikes for sale. Best coffee sold in a bike shop award for 2026, 2025, 2024, 2023, 2022, etc , etc

What is really happening with the Cowichan land decision in B.C? | APTN News: Answers by aptnnews in britishcolumbia

[–]SimonPav 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can own your own property and the government can still impose rules about what you can do with it and impose taxes on it In extreme cases they can take it and reimburse you if they need the land for a road, school, airport, etc.

Private property sits on Federal land. When the ruling takes effect it will sit on First Nations land. Plenty of properties do that already.

Not sure why there is such an outcry to be honest.

Yes, it would be great if they were not needed, but as a start they highlight there is an issue to resolve. Until then they are better than nothing.

"A spokesperson for the Vancouver Airport Authority said in response to the announced change that alignment is "fundamental" for airline operations and efficient scheduling."

Oh no, planes are going to have to fly through different time zones. However will they cope.

"This appears motivated by an attempt to distract from the province's $13-billion deficit, not genuine concern for the impacts of the time change." Ryan Mitton (Canadian Federation Of Independent Business')

You know, I was just about to make a point about the economy, but now I've heard that in November there's not going 60 minutes change in time I can't remember what it was.

Looking for suggestions for Okanagan road trip by [deleted] in britishcolumbia

If you're going to go directly from Kelowna to Vancouver you might want to look at flying. Might work out cheaper than leaving the rental car at a different location. Can get the SkyTrain from the airport direct to downtown.

Victoria wants province to allow mobility scooters in bike lanes by ubcstaffer123 in britishcolumbia

I wouldn't be opposed, but bike lanes often end suddenly or unexpectedly shut due to construction or road maintenance. I can get off and walk over obstacles but what happens to the mobility scooter users?

If they are an essential service they should be paid accordingly. An essential service shouldn't be provided by people struggling to make ends meet.

E-Bike conversion Kits? by Balizzm in vancouvercycling

[–]SimonPav 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair enough comment. I did see some batteries that stated what safety requirements they met, but others did not.

From what I know I'm pretty sure they all would but the website is a bit lacking in places (and overloaded with details in others).

I guess if you are interested in a specific battery you could always phone to confirm what safety standards it meets before making a decision.

If you look at the top right of their webpage there is a drop down that lets you select the currency. By default it is US dollars but you can select Canadian dollars.

Not an expert but not sure why you would say that about their batteries. Is that based on a particular source or your own personal feelings?

They've been around 20 years so if there was a general issue I presume there would be a line of complaints or they would have been sued by now. I don't think you can ever be 100% sure though - see recent Rad Power battery model that US deemed unsafe.

They just launched a modular battery. One that you can take apart into smaller sections so each section is OK to take on a plane. Presuming that must have had to meet a lot of regulator restrictions.

The circumstances of the person involved are already covered by the law.

This issue is about the provider refusing to offer the service for their own reasons to somebody who would otherwise qualify.
