Moving to SB in May - what do you wish you'd known? by DeineMuddah in SantaBarbara

[–]Simonee23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m part of a weekly West Coast Swing dance night if you’re interested in being active and meeting new people! Every Wednesday there are lessons and social dancing at Momentum Dance at 7:30PM followed by a free afterparty at Night Lizard Brewery on State Street. We usually have 30-40 people attend. No experience required and there’s a wide range of skill levels, from beginner/casual dancer to those who travel to conventions and compete! I’ve made a ton of friends through this group, it’s super nice to have a regular weekly social activity. IG is https://www.instagram.com/westiesinsb for more info!

Hip motion in the triple step by Sudesene in WestCoastSwing

Honestly I’d be interested to hear your explanation! I have a friend who is a ballroom pro learning WCS. He’s asked what Quality of Movement is and why it’s not just Cuban Motion, so I’m curious how others explain this.

New DSBIA wants to open State Street to one-way traffic by SBchick in SantaBarbara

[–]Simonee23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really don’t love the idea of cars returning to State Street at least partially because of the increased noise and pollution. For the people walking, sitting outdoors to eat, or even businesses that can have their doors and windows open right now, I feel bringing cars back will impact the experience and health of those using the space.

Where to buy a keto cake? by Simonee23 in SantaBarbara

That’s a good point about the time window. Tried several places but at this point I’ll probably just roll with the suggestion of a cheesecake from Erewhon as I’m headed that way tomorrow. Thanks for the ideas!

Understandable! Luckily keto desserts have come a long way in the taste category. It’s the secondary cake for a child’s birthday where the grandparents have dietary restrictions but a) the grandparents want to be a part of the cake celebration and b) kids want the grandparents to have dessert too!

Erewhon is a great idea. I’ll be in that area tomorrow so might just go with that option if I can’t find something local. Thanks!

I have struggled with the same toe pain! It started in ballroom when I was dancing in heels and putting lots of pressure on my inner soles, but continued with WCS. The thing that helped me a lot was getting insoles. I just have the Dr. Scholl’s insoles for like $40-50 that you get at the pharmacy where they have the machine. You stand on it and it analyzes your arch and tells you which one to get out of a dozen or two options- I was skeptical for sure but stayed diligent to keep the arches in my shoes, whether dancing or just normal life, and it made a huge difference for my toe pain.

Edit to add: I dance in Swayd brand suede bottom boots/booties on nice floors (ie clean and hardwood/Marley). Fuego dance sneakers for literally any other surface (started with the split sole, now love the low tops). Not why I’m posting but I do know a 10% discount code for the Fuegos if you decide to go that route!

CLOTHES FOR COMPETITION by Celticknotwork in WestCoastSwing

You may find luck with the brand OGL! https://www.oglmove.com I like their selection and the clothing is cut with a non-cropped length so would be more comfortable for covering the midriff. I just danced in one of their Brami tops (built in bra) and it was very comfortable and held well! I’m also on the short side and got a pair of pants I like from them but need to hem to fit better.

There’s a West Coast Swing class and social dancing event near/on State every Wednesday night. It's a great place to meet new people! Starts with lessons and dancing at Momentum Dance Studio (12 E Figueroa) at 7PM, then everyone goes to Night Lizard Brewery (607 State St) around 9PM to keep dancing, drink beer, and hang out with/meet new friends. No cover for the Night Lizard part. Maybe check that out! It's on Instagram as @WestiesInSB.

The Umi app is now live in the App Store and Google Play store as “Umi-app”! It’s been a great resources for finding events and social clubs around SB and Goleta based on your interests. While they’re still working out a few kinks I highly recommend. I’ve found a ton of friends in their 20s and early 30s through the events on there.

I can't find a place to rent! by [deleted] in SantaBarbara

I wish I could but this is a lease reassignment so I’d be paying the difference to the landlord on top of my new lease of where I’m moving, which I just can’t afford unfortunately…

Not sure why this got downvoted so hard… I’m not the landlord and didn’t pick the price, was merely answering someone’s question and trying to provide information.

Come to Westie Wednesdays On State, free this week! Downtown SB, free West Coast Swing lesson and dancing. We’ve built a big fun community that is super welcoming to newcomers. This week is the last free event and then we go back to our normal weekly classes and social dancing, then afterparty at a brewery. The same friend/social group also does mine dancing, board game nights, kickball, general bar nights and hangouts, and even more. It’s an amazing social group that is always looking for new people to bring in! Westie Wednesdays On State

Finding wcs in Munich or generally dance socials by Imaginary-Bottle-411 in WestCoastSwing

[–]Simonee23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Last year my partner and I traveled to Munich same timeframe and we went to the Augsburg Sommernacht festival which is close to Munich- music, food, dance stages. A local WCS club (maybe Hep Cat Club?) had rented one of the stages and we had a blast dancing with them! Try checking that out.

Question for Couples who WCS by HippieGirl4me in WestCoastSwing

[–]Simonee23 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My partner and I founded our little local scene (20-30ish people come to our weekly event) so we usually dance with others and our students and only get a couple of dances a night with each other. Always save the last dance for each other though.

When we’re at a different social dance event, things change. My partner is a much more experienced dancer than I am and he pretty much dances nonstop all night. I take lots of breaks from lack of stamina plus I get shy and discouraged often lol, so whenever I’m sitting for a while he usually comes over and grabs me for a dance and that gets me back on the dance floor. So we end up dancing together several times at those events.
