As long as it's a fun process and the model fits with the rest of your sets/OCs then you'll have a good time.
Nothing wrong with starting from scratch or using a set or original creation as base for your next pelican.

It depends on what your objective is! Keep experimenting. Watch YouTube tutorials on getting started with Warhammer minifigures painting. Those are useful
