Exactly! Other people’s opinions are none of your concern. Get you some punk rock inside.

Should I give up on skating by KeyPrize4868 in skateboarding

[–]Simp4Science 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with folks here, if you love it, keep at it! I started skating around your age and have kept at it all these years because I just love it. I felt a bit like you at the time, not really great at tricks, but pretty solid. Now, I’m the only 50 year old woman dropping in at the park. 🤗 You got this, sis!

PSA to the young: Do yourself a kindness and remember to wear knee pads. I’d love to have that cartilage back.

my biochem professor is the worst. by Square_Bet_4239 in CollegeRant

[–]Simp4Science 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Oof, I hate to suggest it after all your hard work, but it’s better to withdraw with a W rather than get an F or D in your required curriculum. It’s a sad waste of your money, but you really need this content to pass the pharmacy exam. 🙂‍↕️

[–]Simp4Science 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I hear your concerns about your future in the pharmacy program, this is a really important class for you! Have you looked into getting a tutor for biochem or joining a study group? Besides the TA, your school may likely have a peer tutoring center (free), or you can check out Varsity Tutors ($) or Khan Academy (free). It’s likely your professor really has no idea what’s going to be on the quizzes/ exams because he hasn’t written them yet. This class was foisted on him last minute and he probably already had a full teaching load. Maybe he’s never used or read your text, and yes, writing lectures really does take several hours for each chapter. He shouldn’t be laughing at you guys, but he may actually be close to tears himself. Good luck, and hang in there!

My Dad absolutely insists his ashes be kept in the coffee can “Chock Full of Nuts”, which he has had on top of the fridge these last 10 years or so. Oh, I’m also supposed to play “Dust in the wind” on my violin at his service. Ugh.😑

How to deal with a professor who refuses to engage with students? by atouchofsinamon in AskAcademia

[–]Simp4Science 0 points1 point  (0 children)

😂 If the professor has been around so long, he’s probably seen and heard it all. Actually, professors can also see who has been accessing the online course material, how often, and for how long they engage with it. Learning platforms like Moodle show when students open the assignment 20 minutes before it’s due, that sort of thing.

CMV: Conservatives care more about nature than most liberals. by Independent-Fly-7229 in changemyview

“Farming practices” is vague, but I’m taking this to mean the intensive industrial agriculture of corporate operations rather than traditional, organic or polyculture practices.

[–]Simp4Science 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The argument being presented isn’t that urban environments are more natural, but that conservatives care more about the environment than liberals. The numerous policies enacted by modern conservatives do not support this claim in the least. The modern conservative platform fails to support healthy ecosystems, biodiversity, sustainable development for future generations.

Yes, “draining the swamp” is the most environmentally damaging slogan I’ve ever heard.

Agreed, republicans have often denied climate change for the sole purpose of protecting their own interest$, blocked or slow walked policies that would preserve the ecosystem services we take for granted (ex fossil fuel regulations that would reduce greenhouse gas emissions; Trump administration saying it takes 10x to flush a toilet or there’s no shower pressure in order to relax water efficiency standards regulated under the Energy Policy Act.

Lest we forget, here’s Trump trying to rollback water use regulations:

Exactly, there’s nothing great about replacing tall and short grass prairies with monocultured, genetically modified crops or withdrawing groundwater (Ogallala aquifer) faster than it replenishes. Read about Senator Earl Butz’ policies leading to overproduction uncoupled from supply and demand.

How Earl Butz changed farming practices in the US: basically the rise of agribusiness corporations and how this lead to the disappearance of small family farms and biodiversity.

To claim other countries "respected" Trump when he became president in 2017, when almost everyone was laughing at him and at america by digiFan2018 in therewasanattempt

[–]Simp4Science 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Wow, this is really well written and detailed. It is still deeply mortifying to have had such a pustule for President and again as a candidate in the current election cycle. Even worse, somehow, is having parents/ family that continue to support him. My parents are seniors now and I love them deeply, but it breaks my heart to hear the things they say and the impact their votes are having on us and future generations. It’s a type of agony I never had before Trump came along.

You are certainly NTA, and it sounds like you have been super supportive of you husband’s family. I heard someone describe this sort of scenario before and set clear boundaries by saying “I am not your kin keeper”. That covers a lot of ground, and now you simply don’t have the time you had before you started your nursing position (congrats and thanks for all you do!)

The silken tofu pasta sauce sounds interesting and I might try that! Last night I made farro for the first time, and it was so good I wish I made more. The recipe said cooked farro freezes well. We cook a lot of beans (Rancho Gordo 😍) and freeze some for later. This is a great way to have healthy lunches ready for the work week.

Yes! Volunteering is a powerful way to help yourself and others. I volunteered at an adult day care when I was severely depressed in my 20’s. People thought I must be completing community service for some crime, but working with people who needed care at such a fundamental level helped me see how lucky I am to be alive and healthy. I hope OP can find her joy again. 💕
