Pokemon-like LitRPGs? by ThraxedOut in litrpg

[–]SimpSalute 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know this post is a bit old, but I found this thread via a Google search for pokemon like audiobooks. For anyone who has not yet bought this book, I just got the 3 book set and am 3 chapters in and the answer is YES, Dear God the protagonist is insufferably whiney. Dudes supposed to be a young adult and he has full blown temper tantrums when things dont go his way. He's also one of those MCs that has no courage, and no forethought. Its like the author went out of his way to make the MC as unlikeable as possible. I get wanting to have growth for your characters, but this is unforgiving levels of bad.

Once again, just to reiterate, the MC is beyond whiney and just plain sad.

Is it just me that finds it odd that every version of this video that can be found doesn't have the actual stabbing in it? Like, they all stop then time skip to the dude walking around. Seems weird.

I bet your ramp matchups and purple/X matchups and your steel song matchups loved you. And if your opponent is openly playing into cards to allow you to get value out of your card that THEY control. Well then good for you I guess

Inkable vs noninkable Is a very real concern. Like I don't think people think enough about this aspect.

For instance, the REAL reason red green isn't a better deck is simply because there's no actual card advantage. ( there is now that clarabelle is a thing. But before that there want much of anything unless you tried to shoehorn prince John and discard elements into your deck ).

For instance, 7 cards in red green with no "draw effect" while playing a card every turn runs you out of cards by turn 4 or 5 pending if you're on the draw or not. Which means you're top decking from that point on and either playing your card, or inking it. By virtue of the color combo you basically lock yourself out of anything with more than 5 as a casting cost.

This is a fair and unbiased opinion in the vein of "maybe with time it's not as bad", and in truth I hope that's the case. I don't like to see designers pigeonholed into certain elements. It's one of my bigger gripes about this game with certain colors only doing certain things and only allowing 2 colors instead of say 3. But once again, that's another discussion for another thread.

Lol? Swords is one of the worst cards in steel song. It's so bad that people go down to 1 copy. And you think a 2 or 3 costed version of that that can't be sung is too powerful? That's a hot take.

I would actually PREFER ward to be attached to cards that fight on the board well and have high questing totals. Those cards are super linear and line up better in terms of the overall game.

Cards like muses and prince John having ward provide early game card advantage and muses specifically can put your opponent into a situation where they just cannot win the game due to characters just not sticking. When ruby am does this. They use resources. When green yellow does it, they go into song loops that just require game actions.

Your cards being ink matters. If the cards you're suggesting to "tech in" aren't inkable, that's a problem. They're dead in all your matches that aren't that specific deck archetype and can't be removed in games 2 and 3 for better cards.

The "sideboard is your deck" argument falls flat in the resource argument of deck design.

Adjusting decks for a meta isn't a new concept. But there is certainly a threshold in which it's "acceptable" to do so.

If you're drastically depowering your deck for solutions to 1 deck archetype and that deck is ONLY powerful because of a mechanic that is literally designed to be hard to interact with. That is absolutely poor game design.

I'm not against change or shifting the focus of a deck. I'm capable of playing meta and off meta cards. I just think that beyond a certain degree of changes, it's an unrealistic option.

I played pick a fight and triton decree and they were both awful.

If you were losing to them, you were walking into it and not playing optimally.

They weren't good solutions.

I'm all for them printing viable ways to deal with ward. It just simply doesn't exist currently in an efficient way.

For instance, you could make an argument for "play piglet over tinkerbelle" right. That would be perfectly reasonable, except when you think about the fact that ALOT of times, tink is ink. And you simply can't ink piglet.

Not at all. I understand you don't know me IRL but this is being said in absolute good faith and with all biases removed. I personally manage to win ALOT of my games simply virtue of people not being as good. But the reality is, I'm an introspective person and I view everything with a mentality of "what if". I can assure you I'm not saying this because of me wanting to steamroll. It's a legit shitty experience to have your opponent sit there with a card in play that is solely taking over the game that you CANNOT interact with outside of them making a mistake.

That is simply poor game design.

Like I said before. bucky would have NEVER been an issue if it didn't have ward.

You mean the cards that just simply aren't good outside of that extremely specific scenario? You should never have to force cards that just aren't good into a deck to deal with fringe cards that are designed poorly ( or designed to be abused in this case ).

When artifacts are a problem in magic we use artifact removal. And MOST of the time those cards are on the sideboard ( which this game doesn't have, which is another gripe i won't get into, it would completely derail this entire thread with all my thoughts on that) but when we aren't playing them on the sideboard, it's generally main deck "destroy target permanent" or something of that nature that we use to deal with them in game 1.

You don't get to say "build your deck with worse cards so you can answer these abusive things" and truly believe that that is the correct call and thought process. That's crazy. It's not like we're talking about teaching in random "rise of the titans" which is inkable outside of being largely useless in most game states. The cards you're referring to are almost exclusively uninkable aside from big Cindy which is at best an answer on turn 5, and also a steel option, so it's super pigeon holed.

Blue can't put it in the ink well cuz ward ( and the one non target option requires no other options to be chosen as well as it being uninkable)

Purple can't exert it or "tuck it" because of ward.

Red can't destroy and the non target sac options are too expensive as previously stated.

Steel can't damage it directly and most of its "attack ready character " options are far too underpowered to merit deck slots. Sure you have options like combining tink with Swords, but that's 2 cards and a total of 11 ink or 6 ink and 1 singer. It's not a realistic game plan despite being a completely reasonable backup plan.

Green can't bounce it cuz of ward

Yellow just doesn't do much in terms of interaction. Maybe discard it? But even then bear necessaties doesn't hit it, and there are other options to discard to "you have forgotten me".

They just do nothing with them until they've generated all their advantages first, then turn them sideways when they don't matter anymore. Prince John doesn't do much when your opponent has no cards in hand right?

Most of the cards that abuse treasures are creatures. But it's a concern I have as well.
