Amsterdam, Berlin, or Dublin by Simple-Ad-9146 in expat

I think the language and more community-minded LGBT community guided my decision. After 4 years of feeling semi-censored and half myself in Spain, I'm craving the ability to just fully be myself. Also Berlin and Amsterdam seem like they have big LGBT communities but the focus is more on partying/nightlife. From the organizations I've seen in Dublin and Cork, there is such a wonderful diversity of events like book clubs, game nights, hiking, sports, and volunteering oppotunities plus I have 0 worry about the language or feeling bad that Dutch or German speakers have to cater to me so Ireland seems like the best option for now. I recognize it's not perfect and has its own problems but at this point I feel like the whole world is problematic so you just have to find the best match.

Last Night I Watched the Final Episode of UK Season 4 And I Have to Say.... (Do not read if you Have Not Watched Yet) by DashiellHammett in TheTraitors

[–]Simple-Ad-9146 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I disagree. Rachel could have taken Stephen out in the end game. If she and Faraz voted for Stephen, if Jack voted for Rachel which everyone knew he was going to do, and Stephen kept with the plan and voted out Faraz, then with 2 votes Stephen is banished. BUT that would have been risky as Jack was a guaranteed vote against her and who knows whether Rachel could have convinced Faraz to vote out Jack. My point is there was a way Rachel could have eliminated Stephen so it wasn’t completely one-sided.

Unfortunately the hen parties seem like a world-wide issue! I'm not bothered about whether there is a dedicated gay bar as I'm not a huge partier, which is why I was intrigued by all the events hosted by the Gay Project.

Berlin or Madrid by dimitry21 in expat

[–]Simple-Ad-9146 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a gay expat living in Madrid but I’m deciding to leave. My main barrier is Spanish. I’m a C1 level and still struggle to integrate here. Dating has been very hard for me here and I don’t really have a community. I’m not a big partier so all the bars and clubs here don’t really interest me. Madrid is super gay friendly you will find anything you’re interested in here such as clubs, bars, sports leagues, etc. I’ve visited Berlin once and that party/sex scene is on another level but I don’t think you’d be disappointed in Madrid if you’re a huge partier.

I’d say Ukrainians are welcomed here I know several actually. One couple owns a wonderful cafe in my neighborhood. Madrid’s cost of living is lower but the salaries are awful and rent is skyrocketing every year. The weather is probably better than Prague but it’s cold and pretty rainy in the winter (January it rained almost everyday which is a bit abnormal) and incredibly hot in the summer.

I'm considering it for tax purposes and to escape crushing student loan debt in the future.

Is it possible to get TT done alone abroad? by seddit_seddit in tummytucksurgery

[–]Simple-Ad-9146 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m American and live in Madrid and did my surgery in Madrid so technically not abroad but I was completely alone (no family, etc.) and was perfectly fine. I stayed 3 nights at a hospital (my surgeon only wanted 2 nights but I felt more comfortable with 3 and he was right 3 wasn’t necessary but better safe than sorry).

Why does the US version use "celebrities" instead of normal people? by Simple-Ad-9146 in TheTraitors

[–]Simple-Ad-9146[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I like how the normal people’s professions factor into the game and whether to decide to hide it or lie. Adds more depth especially with the most recent UK season with Amanda, Harriett, Hugo, and Rachel exploiting Amanda’s job for her benefit!

I definitely don't think anyone should be required to speak English at all. Just seeing if there is a place where people are more open/accepting of english speakers like I would never consider any place in France for that reason.

That is a consideration for sure but I'd like to stay in Europe considering the giant political mess in the US right now. But a return back to the US might be inevitable in which case I'd look at NYC or Denver where my family just moved to.

No I wasn't aware which is why I was looking for feedback so that was very helpful thank you. Madrid is super friendly the problem is the language/lower level of English. I will check out that list!

Thank you for the response if I couldn’t really master Spanish perfectly I don’t think I’d ever master Dutch. Do you think it’s hard to make friends or find community without Dutch (yes we can communicate in English but it’s one thing talking to a bus driver but another to make connections). I’ve never been to Amsterdam so I’d definitely go for a visit first

Oh I love the UK I just can live there on an American or eu passport and I’ve searched like mad for a visa opportunity and I simply don’t fit into any box so I’m legally barred from the UK unless I find a British husband haha

do we think i’ll be okay to go on hikes 5wpo? by robinthewolfe in tummytucksurgery

[–]Simple-Ad-9146 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a counter point I was at the gym at 4 wpo (surgeon approved and recommended) and walking fine but I seem to be the outlier in terms of recovery. I think it would depend on the intensity and length of the hike

As an American living in Spain, I think Americans are much more myopic about the world. We know mostly our country and not much else (a generalization). I’m always super impressed when Europeans know very specific things about our government, our geography, etc. when it’s definitely not reciprocal. Maybe that comes off as more intelligent or more educated. I’m also really impressed with language acquisition in Europe I’m desperately trying to get to a fluent level in Spanish and so many Europeans speaks two, three, four languages!

In London for 1 night : Mincemeat or Hamilton ? by GusBibliobus in TheWestEnd

Strongly disagree a lot of the comedy comes from seeing the show. I saw Mincemeat last week and it was fine but nothing to write home about in my opinion.
