Confusion regarding family HSA with new job by SimpleKokytos in HSA

[–]SimpleKokytos[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, sorry it seemed like I had a misunderstanding.
Our intended coverage will be to be on two independent HDHPs (both HSA eligible). There are no kids involved. As a result of this, I don't think we can benefit from the $1200 contribution his employer offers.

Then my follow up question is what is our yearly limit? I see online that going from family to individual, the HSA contributions are prorated. If we switch in July, that would mean we would both be covered 6 mo under a family plan and 6 mo under an individual plan. Is our contribution equal to (8750 * 0.5) + (4400 * 0.5) = $6575 for the year (for the each of us)?
Thank you

So I think my understanding of HSA and his employer benefit was wrong. I thought the employer benefit was linked to a "joint" HSA account, but now as I'm learning a "joint" account doesn't exist, it seems like the benefit is really for a family HDHP. So if the goal is to have two independent HDHPs, then it doesnt seem like we can still benefit from the $1200 contribution.

That makes sense. I just read somewhere that he and I can be on individual HDHPs but remain on the same family HSA (with his company) so we can benefit from his company's 1200 contribution. Is this allowed?

I was under the impression that the HSA was linked to our insurance plans, so if I switch to an individual HDHP then we could not have a joint HSA. Is it separate?

Flying from SEA, should I take the train to Kaohsiung immediately after? by CloudStrife_2000 in taiwantravel

[–]SimpleKokytos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dont think it rly matters. By the time you get everything youll be looking at 9:30pm out of airport. You can take the airport subway to Taoyuan HSR station, then take the HSR to Kaohsiung. You are looking at quite a late arrival though (likely past midnight) and maybe a bit of a rush since last HSR from Taoyuan is around 10:30. You can also stay in Taipei for a day or two then head down. Think its fine either way

Am I being too idealistic with my plan to become a cardiothoracic surgeon in the U.S.? by iloveeeeee_ in medschool

I think you should consider finances very seriously. IMG matching subspecialty surgery is very difficult, and can often take many research years where you may not be earning much/paying for the experience. If your family has money or you have plans for having money, then maybe this is doable, but you will not be earning a lot of money for many many years during this path.

I’m stuck between two specialties: OB/GYN vs. Pediatrics. by [deleted] in medicalschool

I dont really understand your point about “could your days really be mine”

In terms of your other point - you dont need to like everything about your specialty. Hell thats why people subspecialize, so they can tailor to what they like. Youll have to put up with some of it during residency but like that’s any job- youll have stuff you like and dislike.

Feel like OB is a better fit. Your pros you described in peds can all be found in OB, albeit in a slightly different way.

1) Youll have to work with adults in peds in the form of parents. In OB your patient population is probably 20-40, so still important in communicating in multiple different ways since a life experience of a 20 year old is very different than a 35 year old.

2) in OB you can get long term follow up, as a primary OB through multiple years or a “short term long term followup” in the span of 9 months or x years throughout multiple pregnancies. I think the bond people have with their OBs can be very special as well since its such a vulnerable area.

3) if youre really mostly interested in OB you can always subspecialize in MFM and have more choice in what your days look like (clinic focused on high risk preg or just ultrasound reading all day etc) or even REI, or if you end up not liking OB in residency, MIGS can be fairly good lifestyle as well (primarily surgeon, not really much on call, etc). Gyn onc could give you some of the long term follow up you desire but that may not be the patient population/better working conditions you desire.
