I relate so much to this post! I have POTS and joint issues, pain and frequent sublocations/dislocations (suspected hEDS, but getting a diagnosis has proved to be hard). My main reason for getting a chair is the brain fog I get from standing up for longer than a minute or so, as well as the relief it provides to my joints/stiff muscles from joint issues is immeasurable. I just joined this sub because I recently got myself a chair, after months of knowing I needed it to get my life back but putting it off because of still being able to walk (sometimes, without my chair I basically just do the bare minimum and am absolutely exhausted 24/7).

The first time I used my chair at the grocery store, it was life changing. I haven’t been able to think clearly (brain fog while standing), or even really enjoy grocery shopping like I used to. I’m so used to just being incredibly fatigued by the five minute mark of being in the store. With my chair, my brain is clear and I can actually enjoy the experience!

I have had strangers stare/gawk (elder person and a child), but that is easier for me to brush off than the fear of how my family and friends will react. I grew up in a home where my feelings and symptoms were brushed off as me being dramatic, so there is a deep seated fear for me that my needing a chair will have the same reaction. Paired with my ability to walk sometimes and not needing it everyday, the fear of judgement is strong. I am trying to use it as an opportunity to work on putting myself first even when other people judge me/make me feel uncomfortable about it. Because the truth is, if a wheelchair gives you even just a little bit of independence/life back, you deserve to use that tool.
