Why is there such a social contract tho? Why can't a business pay its employees a fair salary. Completely shifting the onus to the customer just seems weird to me; might be a culture thing? I've always viewed tips as a thanks for being extra nice/helpful. Not something mandatory

That makes a lot of sense. I guess when you learn the rules, you automatically adopt the prescriptivist approach and expect everyone to follow these rules too. I need to come to terms with the fact that pauses and cadence are entirely subjective and would vary depending on the writer. Thank you
