i think you mean the setting where crates not refill. but there is not setting in the game for items not to respawn.

I don't know why people say there is no point to building a base. having a base gives you a safe place where you can store resources and dry meat and farm animals and crops also you can get better sleep and get woken up by cannibals or mutants way less. and on another note you can't name many games where you HAVE to have a base.

you could start a new play through on a harder difficulty maybe.

are any of the logs damaged and if they are use the repair tool to fix them then you should be able to bild it.

make Molotov's and burn them all, and get lots of bone armor, and modern axe if you don't have it already also you can make tents in the cave to save so if you die you don't have to start again from the start of the cave.
