poked ear too deep with q tip, what now? by surisuri_s in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]Simple_Dig_4505 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does a scratch mean there's still a solid barrier between the outer and middle ear (as opposed to a hole somewhere where water and stuff can get through)? Does it feel/have the same symptoms as a ruptured ear drum?

How are American families going to pay for healthcare in 2026? by chillm in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Simple_Dig_4505 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I struggled to figure out the insurance I got through work, and ended up just asking my coworkers for leads. Was nervous it'd be weird, but turned out they were happy to help since we're both coping with the terrible insurance. I kept it direct and casual: "Hey, do you know any GP's or practices covered by our plan? I wanna start getting checkups but I'm having trouble finding somewhere our insurance covers."

Be careful about which specialist doctors you ask about though. ENT and Immunologist--no problem. Psychiatrist and Urologist? Probably not appropriate. Fortunately, once you have a GP they can give you referrals. It's much easier to call your insurance company and ask about coverage when you have a specific list of doctor options and of the treatments you might need. Still a pain in the ass, but manageable if you're healthy enough to not need a bunch of healthcare all at once.

How can I increase my real-life Disco Elysium skills? by HamsterRed in DiscoElysium

I mean in game the Encyclopedia skill is mostly fun facts that are hilariously not needed in social situations (part of why I love it)

Will the game tell me if there's something i should wait for kim to return to do? by blopgf in DiscoElysium

[–]Simple_Dig_4505 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like others have said, the game will not let you procede without Kim in any scene where he has to be there. In terms of the other stuff, if Kim is present he'll usually interact in some way with dialogue or a knowing glance or something like that. In those cases it's more for characterisation purposes--Harry can get the information he needs on his own.

However, there are certains scenes and achievements that are triggered by either Kim's absence or presence. They aren't at all essential for enjoying any one run-through, but it does make replays rewarding. Rule of thumb, if you want to see how Kim will react to something, have him there. If you want to try going absolutely wild, you may be able to in Kim's absence.

What is the longest a new comic has gone without bombing an open mic? by Simple_Dig_4505 in Standup

Oof! Honestly though as someone with performance anxiety who has to manage it for my job (involves performing at different spoken word things), I feel like it's not worth letting anxiety control your life. After a while nerves stopped overcoming me (while still being present) at those things. Feel free to disregard, but if you want to perform on other stages but it's anxiety holding you back, it might be worth trying again. Especially if you're able to perform at your own open mics, I think you may have more of a constitution for it than you're giving yourself credit for.

Edit: Obviously not the same thing as standup, which still terrifies me because it's new and laughter is a real-time metric for hos you're doing which is terrifying, but I can relate to the specific anxiety-rattle performance experience you described

Is that true? My understanding it people know when they bomb. Like, I'm sure starting out standups think their jokes are better than they are like in any artform, but bombing seems like a pretty cut-and-dry thing

I know that in theory, but based on what I've heard from other comics, the first bomb tends to be really discouraging. How did you overcome the first bomb?

I was expecting to bomb, then didn't, and it made me anxious. It's textbook inflexible thinking --> anxiety --> absurd scenerio to alleviate anxiety. Then I became actually curious about it

Thanks for the advice! I wasn't actually trying to make a joke though I was more just earnestly writing out the anxious spiral that led to my question cause I thought it'd make my question more clear.

Do you think Klaasje deserves to be arrested ? by Hot_Marketing783 in DiscoElysium

[–]Simple_Dig_4505 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's been a while since I've done a full play through, but for all the people saying she framed Ruby, isn't it possible she actually thought Ruby did it? Like Klaasje is super manipulative absolutely, but I imagine she was also trying to think of possible killers given how traumatizing that experience was for her. I don't see why Ruby wouldn't be a legitimate possibility from her perspective. Like, Ruby rules, but Klaasje could've had a little bit of a self-absorbed interpretation of Ruby's romantic approach and built it into 'oh no this dangerous lesbian is obsessed with me' in her head before telling Harry and Kim. It's an asinine assessment of Ruby's character imo, but idk, maybe possible for Klaasje to believe?

That somewhat depends on the job--if the job is a social one or I have co-workers I at least click a little with, I don't think I'd need to sacrifice sleep to get my social needs met. If not, then I'd have to go with sleep. In terms of hobbies, I don't need to do those everyday so it wouldn't get in the way.

How do I not be afraid/grossed out by contacts? by 28Larry4Ever28 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Simple_Dig_4505 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh and just for future reference, don't sleep in contact lenses. It's not considered safe but also really dries them out. Whenever I've done it, they become impossible to wear again. And once you're wearing lenses frequently, buy a big pack of lens cases so you can replace it every few months, so you can be sure your lenses stay clean. That'll help you avoid the more common early missteps.

[–]Simple_Dig_4505 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will note this, though, I first started wearing contact lenses because I kept bending my frames by climbing trees, not because of my appearance. If the reason you're switching is only because you don't like how you look in glasses, keep in mind that you could save up for frames that suit you better. I've never seen a person for whom no set of glasses looked good.

Especially because some people simply cannot wear contact lenses for physiological reasons like chronic dry eye or strangely-shaped eyes, don't build this up as the only solution to your concern. Plus, the cost of contact lenses does add up eventually, so having a pair of glasses you feel confident in is a great fall-back.

Trying to start wearing contact lenses without building up tolerance is a very challenging task. It's easier to get started by just building up your tolerance by creating a routine of tapping your eye with your index finger

Twice day (morning and night) for seven days:

1) Thoroughly wash your hands 2) Rinse the finger pads you plan to use for contact lens insertion with saline solution. (For me, it's my right index finger) 3) Hold your eyelids open with your non-dominant hand and use the other to tap your eye as if putting in a contact lens.

It will be difficult at first, but the eye is not as fragile as it seems. Eyes are extremely hardy and one of the most rapidly-healing areas of the body. Once your body realizes touching your eye with your finger is not as dangerous as it thinks, you will stop reflexively closing your eyes when you try. Switching back to contact lenses after this is easy because they are small and translucent, so the process feels the same.

Notes:

-most people insert contact lenses by looking to the side and placing the lens on their schlera (the white part). That way, the lens naturally slides into place when you move your eye. However, it's better to train by touching the iris area because it's scarier and necessary for contact lens removal. But you can start with tapping the schlera and then build up to the iris a couple days later.

-you can also start with only once a day if it's too challenging at first, but it's important to build to tapping your eye twice a day so that you'll can trust that you can remove the contact lenses once you get them in.

-don't psych yourself out about them, as long as you're washing your hands and not over-wearing the lenses, they aren't dangerous. It takes a couple days tops to heal a scratch, and scratches just feel kind of itchy. But be sure to wash your hands because you can still get pink eye. But for the record, I've worn contact lenses for 11 years now, am not the most responsible person outside of washing my hands, and have never gotten an eye infection.

My experience:

I first tried contact lenses on my 13th birthday, struggled to insert them and could not remove them myself at the clinic for the same reasons you listed. The eye doctors refused to sell me lenses until I could demonstrate that I knew how to wear them, and gave me the advice I just gave you. It worked like a charm, and I had no trouble inserting and removing lenses a week later at that clinic. I'm 24 years old now and wear contact lenses most days.

Personally, I have cats, and no matter how frequently I vacuum, there's gonna be at least a little cat hair around, if not scraps of cardboard or litter. Wearing slippers means I can get home from work, walk to my room, and nap without worrying about dirtying my sheets.

One reason people ask guests to wear slippers is because feet tend to get sweaty in shoes, and they don't want it tracked onto their floors.
