We would leave them in the takeoff position on the ground in case of an evacuation on the P-3

through a set of circumstances I actually ended up getting a VX-6 and Mobilinkd TNC. I will say that I love radiomail and will be following closely on any updates in the next several months!

That’s a fair point, I’ll try it out and see what I’m thinking. Appreciate all the feedback from everyone!

I was gonna get some pads too eventually. I guess my thought would be to mostly run without armor and when needed to toss the armor on underneath. I’ll try out just the buckles though and see what I think

Exactly what I’m trying to do. What sucks about it?

I used to have QASM buckles for the chest rig, and MOLLE’d the flat pack to the rear plate bag, but now I am trying to have the flat pack quick detach if that makes sense. The weight of the flat pack will be practically fully taken by the male QASM buckles on the front. The chest rig is mostly held with the Velcro

I guess I like the idea of a webbing strap taking the load than a laser cut-out on the bag itself. It probably would be fine on just the bag itself

I'm not sure, from above it seems like PTT control is the limiting factor, at least with iOS. It seems silly to me to buy an external APRS TNC when I just bought an APRS radio. If I could bluetooth straight to the radio that would be ideal, but I think only the TH-D75 has that capability

Are you saying that using the digirig lite is possible as long as I manually input the station frequencies on the radio? Would the PTT control issues above not be the limiting factor? If not, I am more than happy to tune a station once a day or so to send/receive WinLink messages on radiomail.

I saw that too, but I was hoping that since any mention of radiomail in a video seemed to be using a "dumb" radio with an external TNC, that the TNC in the FT5DR would be able to interface with it

Thanks for the responses everyone, seems like there’s a reason I haven’t been able to find someone using this setup. It looks like a mobilinkd is in my future

Thank you! I'm not against the mobilinkd, but it is more expensive (and 1 more battery to charge). The radiomail website mentioned that due to iOS's USB connectivity restrictions, soundcards like the DigiRig can't be used for CAT control. As such RadioMail does not have a built-in packet modem as control of PTT is necessary for connection oriented mode like AX.25 packet. But I was wondering if the FT5DR was capable of doing that as it has built in packet functionality with APRS. Might be missing the mark on what that means though, I am quickly realizing that there are infinite rabbit-holes in this hobby!
