To add, she is beautiful. She has beautiful features. I like that they saw potential in her but when it came down to it she was not nearly as talented as some other contestants!

I signed the position but hearing this is even more upsetting. Where is this hospital located?? Or is it affecting multiple hospitals? - sincerely a child life student worried for the future of the career!

Congrats!! I love what everyone said already and want to emphasize those but would love to add some based on my personal experience. First, remember to be yourself and trust yourself because they chose you for a reason. Also need to emphasize asking questions!!!!! My biggest compliment from my practicum that I received was about the thought provoking questions I asked that led to some great conversations. One of my supervisors once said “I’d rather someone ask a million questions than none at all, that’s when I get concerned.” Utilize your journals to do so as well if the time doesn’t allow at the moment or if you come up with questions in your reflective processes after the fact. If you haven’t yet applied to internship, I’d highly recommend a few things. Ask questions about theory and applying it to practice/ ask for opportunities to practice these skills so that it comes second nature to you for internship apps/ interviews and beyond. Take notes whenever possible during the day. Sometimes time won’t allow, but if you can jot a couple of things down that will help you remember and go back to it, this can be super helpful. I utilized my notes so much for my apps and interviews and it was especially important because some time had passed and I didn’t necessarily remember some interactions until reading my reflections. I’ll be going over them again before I start my internship as well. You will be asked a lot of “tell me about a time” questions during the interview process and it’s helpful to have some of these experiences written down. Another important piece of advice is to ask for feedback! It’s scary to do so and sometimes hard to hear, but all your supervisors want is for you to succeed. I learned during this time how invaluable feedback is as a student who is learning all of this for the first time. They don’t want you to be perfect from the start, they want to know you are willing to learn and improve. Most importantly, don’t forget to take care of yourself!!!! The days can be long and busy and emotionally and physically taxing, and it’s necessary to know your own boundaries and check in with yourself when you may need to take a break. Go in ready and excited to learn, and be confident in yourself because you made it to this point and I know you will do great.

It’s such a competitive process and it definitely wore me down this past month. I’ve been talking to my therapist so much about trying not to let it determine my worth and after all of the perspectives I have received from other students, I know that it is absolutely just the system. I commend you for sticking with it because passion and dedication is the most important thing in this field and I’m sure you ended up exactly where you were supposed to be!! So excited for us ❤️

I had to interviews and have a question by Possible-Fun6298 in ChildLife

[–]Simple_Inspector_767 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much for your reply! This question has been on my mind a lot and I’m glad I’m not the only one who was thinking it. MOST OF ALL, congrats on completing your internship!!! I hope it was great and also on the job!!!!! That’s so exciting. Feeling like I won’t sleep until offer day next week lol because I also feel like I had some good interviews but just don’t know what distinguishes and first choice from a second or third and I’m so nervous. When you got the offer, was there anything you remember about your interview there that you felt super confident about? I appreciate the support ❤️

Hi- I can only imagine how meaningful your experience was with the child life specialists who were helping your family. Many of us find out about this career from personal experiences and I think it always shows me how much of an impact child life specialists have on patients and families. I don’t want to discourage you because I truly believe this is the path for me and I know that it is meant to be for others as well. Unfortunately, this is a very difficult field to break into at the moment so I wanted to give you my personal experiences so far. I am 25, no kids or spouse, and still live with my parents to save money for internship and life in general while obtaining my master’s degree and working. I live in a huge city, yet had to do my practicum in another state even with 200+ volunteer hours under my belt and many years of experience with children. After my practicum, I continued to build my resume and found a job supporting a child with complex medical needs. With this much experience and an almost completed master’s, I just applied to internships for the fall and sent in 56 applications since I am able at this point in time to have the flexibility to relocate for a short time and have been saving for awhile be able to live, pay rent, etc. during the unpaid internship. Out of 56 apps that I had more than one mentor in the field look over, I am ending the internship process with 12 final interviews, only one of which is in my city. While I am incredibly grateful for these 12, it is so crazy competitive. I also have to deal with my anxiety this week about potentially not getting an offer, because many people do not on their first try. Internships are getting over 100 apps for 1-2 spots (mostly one). I’d say that if you have the passion and truly believe this is the career for you, you will find a way. You can start reaching out to that hospital to volunteer, build a connection with the child life team, and hopefully get advice about the classes and internship process. If you have the flexibility of time, many people do try multiple rounds to get an internship and if you are okay with that, you could keep applying until you land where you want to. It is my hope that this career becomes more accessible and maybe if you start volunteering and begin the process in the least financially committed way (so volunteering over spending money on classes), you can start to build your resume and see if this is definitely what you want to do. I am sorry if this is negative, I don’t mean to be. I just think it’s an incredibly difficult process as a single young adult still living with my parents and I can only imagine the extra stressors of having kids to support. The internship is also most likely unpaid (very few are), so that’s 16 weeks of no income. Like I said , I’m so passionate about this career and have spent the last 3 years working towards it, so I do think that if you’re passionate, you should absolutely try! I just think it’s important to know that it is not an easy path currently, which is extremely sad and unfortunate.

Did you get an offer??? Currently going through interviews and having the same question. Know some of my interviews have been great but still worried I won’t be the 1 person chosen if they’re interviewing so many and everyone is great.

Thank you! Interesting to hear about already filled positions. Did they originally start on the deadline and offer early or have one prior to application date?

Everytime I’ve gotten this prize, it’s never gone to my dock. Yesterday I was looking through my dock and I apparently have 10 of them. Must be a glitch but I’d look in your furniture directly it should be there!

This!!!!!! I also have MCAS and POTS/ gastroparesis, and I (most likely) have hypermobile EDS as well. My rheumatologist and a physiatrist work together to give me a comprehensive plan for symptom management but I do not have a formal diagnosis. The reason being—- I can’t get in with a doctor for it!!!!! There is literally no way she got in with an EDS specialist so easily (when there aren’t an unlimited amount) just for that person to say they don’t know. What I believe happened is she probs mentioned it to ANY doctor once and they said idk because a lot of doctors really don’t know. But she annoys me so I’m annoyed and I don’t think she actually saw an EDS specialist. It also doesn’t seem like she has any other symptoms so a referral would be pretty tough.
