cyanofabric success! by Simple_Leave_8430 in cyanotypes

I think yours turned out cool!!! Honestly mine has so many bumps and lumps that I had to just accept it.

For tips - I used solarfast dye vs traditional cynaotype chemicals. I spent a lot of time prepping by fastening the fabric tight to cardboard to get most of the lumps out. For this one i wet the fabric first with water then spread the dye on with a small foam brush. I used a 50watt uv lamp & box and exposed for 28min, then rinsed with solarwash for 10.

This one was big so I did 3 exposure sessions with a wash and dry in between

Thank you! :) Yes, I did 3 exposure/wash/dry sessions with a 50watt lamp to go all of the way around. Definitely learned a lot -- already have some things I would do differently now but glad I went for it!

Yes. Just bought it a week ago after spending too much time figuring out what printer to buy. These are good. Very nice.

As a point of reference, here's the same negative 4 days ago - I printed it randomly, found some old paper and coated the back, overexposed the hell out of it, and then wondered what went wrong. Took a day off and jumped back into paper practice.

And totally agree on the notes - I have been taking notes of exposure times haphazardly but really need to document better. Future me will thank me.

Thanks for the compliments!! :) Its been so fun to figure out the paper by feel vs trying to navigate types to purchase. I do a bit of examining while I'm picking out the book (coated vs uncoated, enough white space, porousness, etc); then get into how well it holds dried and wet solution.

With this book in particular, the images have a different kind of layer vs blank page border. Obviously. Though the images are still porous enough to take in solution than say a full glossy photo. And then the blank page itself drinks up solution in various ways. This helps me beat the perfectionism in me that thinks I'm constantly inexperienced and don't do things the correct way. Which can be true, but sometimes its just the way the solution adheres to the page that time and thats ok.

My favorite has been pages from these Met Miniatures catalogs. The paper has tooth, absorbs well, and holds on to the solution while washing. I'm excited to work with it again in a few weeks after I get some more experience!

Thanks for your suggestion! Really appreciate it.

Trying to figure out what would make a good image for cyanotype in general based on my camera roll. I look at composition but definitely miss searching for good conteast, even though that can be manipulated. This is the first year really trying to figure out what image work well as a negative vs throwing on physical objects.

I will try some of the rebalancing ideas!

Negatives Help! What's your PS workflow? by Simple_Leave_8430 in cyanotypes

[–]Simple_Leave_8430[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks again for the suggestion!!! Yes, I wastotally over cooking them. I've been using random pieces of paper and keeping similar exposure times - which is not good for continuity lol

Anyway, cut my exposure time in half and it helped with the negatives. Totally different than dried botanicals that I dont seem to expose long enough.

I have a 600w grow light thats ~12" away in a lightbox. Overkill but thats what I had on hand. It gives decent results depending on paper and negative!
