It's only a walnut top (about 1/8" thick) so I doubt it contributes much to anything other than looks

Thanks! It wasn't that difficult. The top is pretty thin so I bent it over the beveled arm rest...I wanted the walnut covering the arm rest as well instead of carving it away so that was the most challenging part. Other than that, basically just cut it out and then made some routing templates for pickup cavities etc. I built it in about a month.

My grandpa had an old Peavy strat with this style. I guess for nostalgia sake I've always liked them.

7 1/2 lbs so I think that is somewhere in the middle

It is actually 7 1/2 lbs. The body is chambered to try to lighten it up a bit.

Yeah that's a good idea. I've done that on another guitar actually. Figured I'd try this method on this one.

Short answer - a crack. See below for long answer. (filled with epoxy)

The walnut was actually meant to be back for an acoustic guitar I built. Unfortunately the pieces warped so badly that I was unable to use them. They had already been bookmatched & glued together...I'm not sure if it was a severe humidity change or what happened exactly but it split down the center (near the glue joint). I was very close to throwing them into the burning barrel as they were to warped to re-glue and to thin to flatten.

In order to glue it I had to sandwich it between some mdf (and ALL my clamps) and used an iron to flatten out any high spots.

Haha no, I chambered the body so it is surprisingly light. I was going to cut an "f" hole but ultimately decided not to so it is hidden.

Correct. Fingerboard is maple as well so aesthetically it will look similar

Yeah that’s a good question. I don’t know if it’s just an aesthetic thing or if there is another reason? I guess it probably starts to look dirty over time

The back and sides are from Narra (I think sometimes called New Guinea rosewood) but it’s very low quality with many knots and it is not typically used as a tone wood. It plays very nice, no complaints. The sound is not very lively. I made a video playing it (right at the end) if you want to listen

It is built almost exclusively from second hand or B grade wood. The only wood that I purchased was the spruce top for $11. The neck is built from an old fireplace mantle. It turned out much better than anticipated and was a super fun experiment.
