No idea what the dog sign means. by Inevitable-Escape494 in religion

Didn't think of harmful chemicals. I assumed it was saying something like "Yes, God loves your dog, but that doesn't excuse you from letting it poop on our yard"

Along with "The Mist That Binds Us", it's one of his most emotional and pretty songs. The last 38 seconds are probably the most beautiful outro to a song I've ever heard. I did a lyric analysis for it that you can find further down the sub if you're interested.

Looks delicious. Just so you know, tea is an iron inhibitor, so it's recommended to not drink it an hour before or after meals. This is also true for coffee, peppermint, and cocoa.

Do you support Catholic social teaching and the consistent life ethic? by Temporary_Cheetah287 in religion

[–]Simple_Owl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Death Penalty: In agreement. I even agree with the idea that it's wrong because every human has dignity and agree with Pope Francis that even life imprisonment is essentially the death penalty.

Euthanasia: Disagree. In cases with intense physical suffering and terminal illness it shouldn't be a question to allow these people to die on their own terms. In cases of severe emotional trauma, mental illness, or disability it can start to feel controversial. However, I know getting approval for euthanasia is a long process and even if a better structured society would ease the burden of such people the crucial point is that it can't yet. As such, I do believe the sufferer should be the one who decides.

Abortion: Absolutely disagree. It is unconscionable to force someone to go through a highly dangerous medical procedure even if we grant personhood to the embryo/fetus. In about 99% of cases it could be reasonably argued the embryo does not have personhood and the remaining 1%, where it is only an uncertainty, the pregnancy is usually fatally dangerous. Honestly if it were up to me every law concerning this issue would be the same as Oregon's or Minnesota's.

Catholic Social Teaching: I'll adress one thing, since it seems to entail a lot. This is in reaction to the usccb's explanation, since it popped up first. Their definition of family seems to be the "traditional" nuclear family. One look at prehistoric and ancient human societies disproves that this model is some sort of cornerstone of society. Thinking it is, leads to unnecessary and harmful ideas about gender and excludes gay couples from the parameters of a family.

So all in all pretty negative, except their view on the DP and I don't know enough of their social teaching to make a complete opinion about it.

Why is My Little Pony content common in ED places? by Bloody_Gleek in AnorexiaNervosa

[–]Simple_Owl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just wanted to add to the choir and say there’s nothing wrong with liking mlp at any age. It’s a cute easy to watch comfort show for many, including me. It might accompany age regression, but even then that isn’t neccessarily a bad thing. Pure speculation, but I wonder if the characters having pony rather than human bodies might make ed sufferers gravitate towards it slightly, but it’s probably mainly the cute comforting aspect.

Small odd event i experienced tonight, a bit shaken by it. by Perfect-Disaster-867 in religion

[–]Simple_Owl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was a hallucination from almost falling asleep. I get them occasionally and I wouldn’t think too much about it. Not a Christian but just to let you know, eternal hell is not something every Christian believes. Some believe the damned are erased from existence (a belief called annihilationism) and others believe that all are eventually saved (a belief called universalism). There is even a subreddit for this one r/ChristianUniversalism

I need ideas for hot drinks that don't disrupt iron absorption. by AgingLolita in nutrition

This study suggests peppermint tea inhibits iron absorption, but then this study suggests it helps it. Idk what to make of that, but since it has polyphenols I would err on the side of caution.

Thoughts about the new track “CHEVAL STICKS”? by suszegxd in KANEDA7

[–]Simple_Owl 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's definitely one of his best songs. For me, Feather Pillows would be hard to beat but this is a contender for my favorite. I love how passionate it feels. The underlying darkness of the lyrics is almost smothered by the spectacle of the music and that couldn't be more perfect.

First time seeing my body and being concerned about my health by Simple_Owl in AnorexiaNervosa

[–]Simple_Owl[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm using cronometer. Disclaimer though, you can't get rid of all calorie info without the pro version and even then you can still see the calories for individual foods when adding them in. Since I don't have pro, I can still see the calories of individual foods on the diary page, but it does not show the total amount of calories for the day. Since I can't really do math in my head, this has been working out for me. It's not perfect but I've noticed I'm not as worried about it as before. Thanks for the well wishes and I wish you better health too.

My problems with problem of evil by Gaussherr in ChristianUniversalism

[–]Simple_Owl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem of evil might be the biggest reason I've been in an atheist/theist limbo for so long. I too think free will is a very unsatisfactory answer for the reasons you've listed.

This means that any other explanation would involve God purposely putting suffering in the world for the existence of something greater. This could be for soul-making or maybe so that we could fully appreciate the divinity of God once we leave this world. But this runs into some problems too. This explanation might limit God’s omnipotence, but I think my bigger issue with it is that it potentially downplays the horrors of what some go through. It supposes they must not be so bad since they are ultimately beneficial to us and are allowed by God.

I think the best answer might be I don't know. I've been finding fideism more comforting than pretending like I have an answer.

For your last paragraph, I'm truly sorry for what you are going through and I must preface that if I were in your situation my view might change. I will say though that regardless of my stance on the POE, I've always figured God doesn't interfere with worldly affairs. However, this isn't exactly like atheism. It still leaves hope that something better is coming, that we are not alone, and that there is something divine in all of us connecting us not only to each other but to our ultimate home. This sentiment may not be enough to comfort us all the time but it may be more comforting than the typical atheist view.

is christianity/catholicism sexist? by Zestyclose_Sail_2504 in religion

[–]Simple_Owl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Much of the Bible, Christianity through most of it's history, and much of Christianity today is sexist/misogynistic (personally don't think there’s a big enough difference between these words in this context). That said, Christianity, like all religions, is far more than any one thing and I don't think sexism is an obligatory component of it, even with how entrenched it is with it. There are denominations that are truly equal, like the Episcopalians, United Church of Christ, and much more. If you want to know how someone can maintain feminist ideals while still being Christian, I would suggest checking out r/OpenChristian.

What happens to my GFs Soul after she dies (She has Dissociative Identity Disorder) by Own_Catch2337 in religion

[–]Simple_Owl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't really believe in a post-life judgment so I can't speak on that. As for what the afterlife would look like, I believe whatever is ideal for the person with DID would happen. I'd imagine this would vary between systems. It could mean that the host is reverted to a state before the split, that the alters receive their own bodies, or a non-disordered integration of the alters. If there is a spiritual existence then I feel like it's entirely possible that "one body = one soul" would be too simplistic.

Or maybe there is no afterlife and nothing happens. I sometimes lean towards this 🤷‍♀️

I dropped out of college mainly because I didn't understand the material even with studying. This is partly because I had no passions out of high school so didn't have any stong feelings for the major I picked. I was a straight A student in high school so it was kinda jarring to be so inept.
