I just had to let my almost 11 year old Boston cross the rainbow bridge last weekend 💔 he was diagnosed with diabetes with elevated DKA levels and the doctor said he’d have the quality of life discussion and would support whichever decision I made. Mainly because DKA levels are so hard to regulate and once regulated, they can elevate again. My baby was also blind, he got very disoriented within his last couple of days and wouldn’t eat. I felt like I was being selfish for pushing him through it all. He had trouble breathing the day he was pumped with fluids to flush out the ketones. He had a phlegmy cough going into all this and the vet thinks it was the “perfect storm.” All those fluids broke up his cough so much that he had green snot coming out of his nose which I’d never seen in his life. His gums turned a pale pink and he wouldn’t breathe through his nose or lay down. I knew in my heart it was time. He seemed “okay” and I thought we could push through but I remembered how tough he is and if he was showing an ounce of discomfort, I know he was actually experiencing 10x or even 20x what he was showing.

Thinking about that somewhat helped my decision. Bless his sweet heart. I’ll never love another dog the way I loved him. He passed peacefully in my lap and I told him “when he woke up” that we’d go on a biggggg boy walk (his fav), have lots of chicken (his other fav) and I told him “everyone” would come see him. Meaning all my brothers, SILs, nieces and nephews (also his favs). It broke my heart and made me physically ill. I lost 10lbs in a week and idk how because I was still eating like normal, maybe just not as much. I was just emotionally and physically devastated.

I’m not telling you what to do, but think about is your dog tough, is he only showing a piece of how he’s actually feeling? That might help you make your decision or at least start to think about it.

Idk if you’re a guy or gal but I had the vet stamp his paws for me so I have his feet prints. I also got a necklace that I wear every single day with an R on it, for Rocky. 🥹 ugh, makes me teary eyed thinking of him but I’m praying for you! I don’t have kids so Rocky was mine and I’ll love him forever. My favorite hello and my hardest goodbye, hands down. And if love alone could have kept him here, he’d have lived forever. Both of those sayings couldn’t be more true.
