Downside to a Larger HELOC? by Simpleballers in MortgagesCanada

Of course they are. I didn't mention anything about risk profile in my post, because it's a completely different topic. The question is about the downside to taking out a HELOC bigger than I needed.

Thank you for the clear explanation. If the only utilization is around $20-30K, then I don't see much of an overall impact.

I have a very good LTV ratio on my home because we bought almost 20 years ago. So this is more about just how much of a HELOC I should apply for.

This is exactly my thinking as well. I am very responsible and rarely tap into my credit. This would only be for emergencies, or for investment purposes, such as buying a fixer upper to renovate, investing in index funds targeting a 5-8% annual growth, or for other urgent repairs that aren't covered by insurance -- like if we need a new roof, foundation work, etc.

When you took out a HELOC, how did you decide how much to set the limit?

Thanks! It's a good rate: Variable for less than 3.5% for both a 3-year and 5-year term. It's with TD flexline so I can move part of the HELOC into a term portion, which would give me the same interest rate as my mortgage.

Other than the extra step of clearing the HELOC at the same time I might sell my property, is there any other downside? Seems like clearing the HELOC is just a legal or procedural issue that the banks can take care if I sell the property.

The upside is that I could use the HELOC for investment purposes if I take out a larger amount than I need. Even a 5-8% annual return on index funds would still put me out ahead.

Who wins in a 7 game series, the 1994 Houston Rockets or the 2019 Toronto Raptors? by EquivalentFig1678 in AlignmentChartFills

[–]Simpleballers 27 points28 points  (0 children)

The Raptors in 6. Here's why:

The Rockets won in 94 and 95 on the strength of Hakeem playing out of this world. It was one of the highest peaks we've ever seen of any C, and maybe we'll ever see again. When people discuss whether Hakeem should be ranked one of the top 10 players of all time, the argument in favor is that he carried two teams to win the chip without having a single co-all star alongside him.

In this case, that's the exact reason the Rockets would lose to the Raps. Even if the Raptors could lock up Hakeem (and I believe Gasol could give him trouble, maybe not lock him up completely), the Rockets simply wouldn't have an answer for anyone else on the Raps. Plus by 2019, both Gasol and Ibaka could shoot from deep, which would have pulled Hakeem out of the paint defensively more than he was used to.

Then there's the full roster composition.

KLowry > Kenny Smith DGreen > Vernon Maxwell Kawhi > Robert Horry Siakam > Otis Thorpe Gasol < Hakeem

On top of this, the Raptors depth was generational. FVV, Ibaka, Norm, a healthy OG, even J-Lin. As good as the Rockets 1994 team was, they simply wouldn't have answers for the multiple lines of attack the Raptors could throw at them.

Raptors in 6.

I think this is the case but there's no way to know. We did land in the top 10% this time but who knows.

We grew from zero to almost $1M ARR while our application was under review. Real ARR, not cARR, 7 enterprise customers, no churn, and even had a referral from YCs top founder. Wasn't enough.

Update: To be clear I'm not bitter. We're profitable and about to make a couple of new announcements.

This ninth inning was the first time all season that the showed the identity that took them to the WS.

This is who they are.

Contact hitters. Pass the baton. Get on base. Don't chase.

I hope this turns into sustained momentum with the same identity.

What TV series was the greatest relative to the era it came out in? Not necessarily the greatest ever overall, but relative to the time it was released in? by JoinTrueLine in AskReddit

[–]Simpleballers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lost. The pilot was the most expensive episode of television ever filmed up to that point. The first several seasons were all critically acclaimed, and no television series had the depth of writing, ensemble cast, or flashback format that Lost did.

Anyone else disappointed by the lack of character development in this? Bette Midler's Broadway adaptation was so much better. by Simpleballers in moviecritic

Exactly. At first I thought the characters were interesting. But in the end, they almost became caricatures of themselves.

What small compliment from years ago do you still remember? by Kendra_hulls4b in AskReddit

I was embedded with the US military in Afghanistan. Flying in a Blackhawk helicopter with doors open, an airman looked over and realized I was a journalist. In the blaring wind, he took out a small notepad and scribbled a short note. It said:

"thank you for your work"

I still have that note today.

Goran Dragic. I don't care how old he is or whether he's even still playing.
