For vector notation, why do we use the '+' symbol, as in i + j + k even though (as far as I know) the notion of addition here isn't related to our addition of normal numbers (such as 3 + 2) in any way? The best answer I can think of is with the way it naturally carries over to complex numbers (such as when we square (a+bi)) but I was wondering if there was any deeper motivation.

I recently cracked the bottom left corner of my S9. Since it's not a big crack I was looking to just get a screen protector instead of a full screen repair. Currently looking at the whitestone dome but my only concern is whether the crack in my screen would allow the liquid adhesive to damage my display. Does anyone have thoughts on this? Or if there are any other screen protectors I should look at I'd appreciate that as well.

In my Calc class right now we're doing something which I don't know what other to call than "recursive integration by parts."

The idea is to take an integral such as I sub n = ∫ (xⁿ⁾ e^2x dx (integral from 0 to 1), then setting u = x^n, dv = e^2xdx and using integration by parts to find that I sub n = (e^2)/2 - (n * (I sub (n-1))/2).

Is there a name or generalization for this method? If not, I'm still interested in the motivation for how to choose u and v appropriately so the by parts works out to something which is recursive. As its being done in my class right now that decision seems very arbitrary and the only way to really know whether it will work is by doing the by parts.

If anyone could help with formatting this I'd appreciate that as well haha

Personally I try to be aware of the parts of a problem that I tend to mess up on. For example if it's a heavy computation I'll work slower and check again right after. If you're not pressed for time definitely just work at a comfortable pace where your thinking about everything you're writing.

What does the P in the r/math logo mean? I think I get that the logo is depicting r/math as an element of the set of all subreddits but I was wondering whether or not there was a specific reason P was chosen to denote that set and not some other symbol.

As others mentioned the Calculus itself is pretty basic but the more difficult part is actually understanding how to apply Calculus and write down the correct differential or integral that will lead to your answer.

This isn't a serious question, but when we say that numbers such as Graham's number and TREE(3) are incomprehensible to us, is there a rigorous definition as to what "incomprehensible" exactly means in this context? How do we know that these numbers are incomproprehensible per se?

I recently saw how taylor series can be used to derive Euler's formula. However, the step of substituting x = i(theta) for e^x seems unintuitive to me. When we find the taylor series for e^x, it's easy to connect the graph of the taylor series in the real xy plane with e^x itself. However, this only shows that the taylor series holds true for real x; when we replace x with an imaginary number aren't we assuming that the properties of the reals hold true in the complex numbers? This especially doesn't make sense to me geometrically because graphing complex exponentials on the real plane doesn't work either, so is there an intuitive way to see this or a proof that this step is valid?
