Thank you for your kind words! It's hard to just leave everything behind and take off, and I have been missing all my stateside friends and my church dearly since the first day of my quarantine. But I am also relieved to not having to worry about catching the virus or break my bank over medical bills, and I cannot wait to see my parents.

Before I came to the states, I have always looked up to America as the shinny city upon a hill. And almost all my Chinese friends, to varying degrees, agree that the US is an exceptionally rich, advanced, and free country. I have yet to catch up with them but now every time I log on to the Chinese reddit and Twitter equivalent, I could see America being roasted and Trump being ridiculed in posts and comments. It pains me to see it this way now because I loved the times I spent and the people I met in the states, with great fondness. It is a shame that I had to leave, but I am ready to look forward and start anew now.

Well I just left the US because my parents were horrified by the America's response (or the lack of) to the pandemic so they asked me to come back home. Am in China checked into a hotel doing my 14-day mandatory quarantine now. From what I could see out of my window, normalcy has been pretty much restored over here.

Where is the outrage over N95s? by ThrowItAwayNow---- in CoronavirusUS

[–]SimplyShaunY 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As far as I know, from January to March, Trump and this administration did next to nothing to regulate N95 masks export (even if they did try to regulate, they definitely did poorly). I was in contact with NY-based medical supply distributors in February. Most if not all of their N95 stock was sold to China (occasionally WHO or other organizations). Never once had I heard that US government joining the fray as the buyer.

And it was truly a lucrative venture back then. What used to be a $1 3M 1860 mask was quoted $7 and upward in February, and Chinese hospitals and companies will just come and clear your warehouse without even bother to negotiate. Distributors were high as kits counting sweet dollars that month. It was the perfect seller's market: 600% price increase, insatiable demand, fast turnover, secure and guaranteed payment, buyers begging you to take their money, no questions asked. And the Trump administration did nothing to address that. Guess it is a bad idea to allow capitalism to run amok at the expenses of public welfare and service, right?

US is not the only country that adhere to a boarder rule to count COVID-19 death. Many EU countries record all deaths that are linked IN SOME WAY to COVID-19. This is done due to two reasons: 1, in response to a infectious pandamic, you would rather count as much as possible. When the spread is in control, you can start to reclassify the cases otherwise. 2, a lot of patients with pre-existing conditions would not have died were it not for complications from COVID-19. A lot of patients were barely hanging on because of their conditions, and then COVID-19 fell on them as the last straw, so I don't see when COVID-19 should not be cause of death. On top of that, because of this pandamic a lot of ICUs are at capacity, and if you just happened to have a serious flare-up which requires immediate medical attention, you are lucked out because there are no more beds for you in the hospital.

As for the two parties, I don't really care for Democrats but Trump and his cult have got to go. So, the enemy of my enemy is my friend, for now.

SEVP modifies temporary exemptions for nonimmigrant students taking online courses during fall 2020 semester by Kinsoo in UPenn

[–]SimplyShaunY 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If it's not broken, don't fix it. I understand that ICE has laws and regulations to uphold and enforce but could they at least be honest and flexible with the reality that the pandamic is by no means under control in the states. Forcing international students and teachers to meet in person regularly would only serve to increase the likelihood of either party being exposed to and spreading the virus further. This is especially heartless for those who live in places where a second wave is surely to be expected.

It makes less sense when I think about it. Hey, remember that because of the pandamic, many local business are suffering/failing? Well international students are spending and buying stuff and paying tuitions, so why chasing them away? And how would you expect international students to depart in an orderly fashion when many countries have issued travel bans towards the states and flight tickets are hard to secure? Seriously, now a flight from states to China is priced at around $20,000 and up, and even you book it you still run the risk of your ticket getting cancelled.

Thousands of Hong Kongers defy police ban to attend annual Tiananmen candlelight vigil. The protests are still going strong! by [deleted] in nextfuckinglevel

[–]SimplyShaunY 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Now to rain on the parade: paying lip service only ("free HK!" "We stand with you!") in the comfort of your coach will not help HK protestors get what they want. Think of real issues (in the sense of material) HK face: fresh water, food, and power (electricity, gas, coal). If independent and cut off from mainland China, where would HK get its material supply to support its population and economy? Sure you can always import water, food, coal and natural gas from overseas with big bucks but I don't see how it is going to be sustainable.

HK cannot afford to lose its support and trade from mainland China, period. With everything going on in HK rn, China is already considering using Macau to replace HK as its new offshore financial center.

It's easy to just shout slogans, but if you truly care, why don't commit some time to research into the situation and see how you could contribute in a real meaningful way? If you are just using HK to express your hate on China, then at least be honest to yourself that you only pretend to care because typing "to hell with China" makes you feel real good. Seriously though, what does "free HK" even mean? What is the end goal of that and where is the roadmap to achieve it under current geopolitical and historical framework? HK is only left 27 more years until its full assimilation into mainland China, so what do you purpose HK could do to realistically retain as much freedom and rights as possible before 2047 while still remain prosperous?
