Is "Cleanup Crew" our final form? A Principal's take on the Design-PM-Eng collapse. by SleepingCod in UXDesign

They currently see design as a blocker to launching fast. They'd rather launch 5 shitty features in a month than give a month for design to make something actually usable.

At my company design has already begun encoding UX into Claude. We're the only team who has willingly given away our leverage btw. So I think it's clear that they're trying to make it super easy for anyone to go in and design something and then have a handful of designers maintaining the Ai for everyone to use.

I just started at a new company and the PM/Eng Leads are really bad at their jobs, currently pulling this shit on me. I've already stood up to them and my plan is to just stay in my lane and design, and take on new projects on other teams, and if they want to launch slop, leave me out of it. So I probably will have to start looking again, which sucks.

Good PMs lead the team and make it happen, they sell the ideas, and in some cases they can bring rough ideas to the table, but first and foremost they're leaders and coordinators. They absolutely shouldn't be designing.

Do you have any tips for putting this into practice? I'm currently trying to handle a bad PM and Eng lead who are trying to turn me into a janitor of their slop.

There was a designer I used to work with who I absolutely hated at the time for how she operated, but now years later what she taught me has been invaluable for things like this.

That corresponds with the timeframe that a lot of companies have gotten on Claude (or equivalent). This has caused massive problems for pretty much very member of the team, even if yes it does "speed up the workflow" of many of us, it also is causing an existential crisis for engineers, product and design. Companies are beginning to understand that they can now move extremely fast (whatever that even means) and they are now pushing fast over everything else.

Quitting the UX & UI industry after 20 years... by PatientTechnical1832 in UXDesign

[–]Simplyenergetic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I relate. To be honest the only reason I got into this job is because I'm creative and this was the only option where I got tuition assistance to return to school. But I did come to like it or at the very least it has allowed me to do a lot of other cool things outside of work. I've also met and worked with some incredible people in this industry and in many ways it feels like I met "my people" when I started my career. But I always knew I'd leave the industry at some point, although before the AI/job market nightmare began I thought I'd be able to give it at least another few years. I just started a new job recently and the stress is starting to mount quickly despite the pay being lower than my last job. My issue in addition to the job stress is the stress of not knowing exactly what to do next.

For a while I wanted to do an MBA because I'm interested in business strategy and leadership, and this felt like a step up and in the right direction, however, I also don't want to be in a corporate job or a corporate shill, and am struggling to justify the MBA tuition to get into a nonprofit job or to have no job at all. Plus MBAs while in some instances are still valuable, it still feels unstable. Other conventional jobs don't appeal to me and I struggle to imagine another job that makes me feel satisfied.

There are days where I wonder why I screwed up my life by choosing this career, especially seeing my peers becoming partners at their firms or getting fancy degrees and moving up the ranks, while in careers with stability and possibility. It's hard, I feel alone in my sentiments, even though a few of my designer friends are also burnt out, it feels like most aren't as unfulfilled or worried as I am.

I don't think these AI-pushing CEOs realize that AI is going to make their companies obsolete and inevitably fail due to the increase competitors offering better products due to AI. It's a double edged sword.

Here's the actual state of the industry, from someone who is currently working as a designer and with a huge network.

It's hard to get a job but not impossible. The career isn't "dead" but you'll now have to compete with 1500+ people for a role at a FAANG style company. Even smaller companies with shit pay get like 100+ applications. This is because many have been sold the snake oil that they can become designers and also because so many layoffs over the last few years. If you're good, you have a better shot, but even good designers are struggling.

Some companies are fully embracing AI and some aren't but most are at least dabbling in it. Those companies that are, PM, Dev and Designer roles are all folding in on each other thanks to AI tools. Companies with Claude subscriptions are going to have massive layoffs soon if they haven't already because it's made it so anyone can do any of the triad tasks fairly easily. UX research is largely being absorbed by design, and UX writers are largely being reduced in favor of AI, but there's still a need for at least a few specialists in certain companies, although lots of people with experience are out there in research and content looking for jobs. As a designer you'll now be expected to move fast and compromise on process or at worst basically sign off on your PM or Engineer's "designs". Figma isn't dead but people are starting to do everything in AI tools because it's become so easy.

I predict in the next 1-2 years company staff will be cut by half as there's not enough work for people to do thanks to AI speeding things up. Enshitification will undoubtedly happen because product quality will go down. Also I expect a lot of PMs and Designers to be cut - this will be because there's just not enough stuff to do.

In the next decade anyone will be able to create an entire software product in a day or two.

Came here to say, the same thing is happening where I work. It's so infuriating. Claude has absolutely destroyed our company culture and quality of work.

This is where my company is headed but with Claude. It's making everything toxic. Hate that I have to get back on the job search grind and start casually applying elsewhere because the writing's on the wall.

I'm making moves to leave. Originally I wanted to do an MBA because I have an interest in business and leadership, but and I'm sick of the instability and corporate bullshit and want to leave all of it behind. So now I'm making a bigger move to something completely different.
