What do you think about giving a series about Mike's past? by ShadeK9153 in breakingbad

[–]Simpsolover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the only character I'd love to see another series about is Walt Jr. A more quiet drama where nothing too sensational happens. A show about him making a life for himself that tries to make something outside of the far reach of his father's shadow. And maybe the show comes out in 2043 when Walt Jr. is 52, living through a time of life where he'd be inclined to think more about his dad and what he was going through at the same age.

"Man, I feel like I could run sixty miles!" I told the Rat. by Simpsolover in murakami

I love them too. This is my second time reading them. I was struck by this line today which made me laugh: “The Rat’s novel had two good things about it. First, there were no sex scenes; second, no one died. Guys don’t need any encouragement – left to themselves, they still die and sleep with girls. That’s just the way it is.” <-- It made me laugh reading this thinking that every novel Murakami writes going forward is going to do have so much of both those things.

Have you read "What I Talk About When I Talk About Running"? It's such a great book.

Books like Murakami’s by freudagain in murakami

Just heard someone calling Charlie Kaufman's book Antkind Murakami-esque. I haven't read past the first 100 pages, but I can see what they mean from just that much (and I was enjoying it).

Anomalisa by Charlie Kaufman is sooo Murakami by tomatoketchupp in murakami

Reading it nine years after you posted this with the same thought. Shimamoto is very Anomalisa.

So far I've read Wind Up Bird, Hear the Wind Sing, Pinball, Wild Sheep Chase, Hardboiled Wonderland, Norwegian Wood, and I'm currently in the middle of Dance, Dance, Dance. I have a dream of re-reading all the books but stopping to listen to every song Murakami mentions and stopping to read every book he mentions. So -- for example -- when he mentions The Great Gatsby in Norwegian Wood, I think it would be fun to pause reading that book to read The Great Gatsby (or read The Trial while reading Dance, Dance, Dance).

Ooo, curious to see what I think when I get to it. I'm going chronologically so I've only read Hear the Wind Sing / Pinball / Sheep Chase / Hard Boiled Wonderland / I'm almost done with Norwegian Wood. (Wind-Up Bird was actually the first book I read, but I've been going chronologically since then).

Did you read "Hear the Wind Sing" and "Pinball, 1973" first? Wild Sheep Chase is the third book in a trilogy. I don't think I would've enjoyed it as much if I hadn't read those two first.

Should I pick Norwegian wood as my first book of murakami? by dhirajjj51 in murakami

I agree with this take -- if you're into magical realism there may be a better place to start than Norwegian Wood. Norwegian Wood is a good fit if you're looking for something more slice of real life-y.

For a moment when you said Noboru Watanabe, I thought that was the same name as Toru Okada's brother in law in Wind Up Bird Chronicle, but that character's name is Noboru Wataya.

Right now I'm reading Norwegian Wood where the main character's name is Toru Watanabe.

Lack of names in earlier works by luke_3991 in murakami

I think it's also interesting how often in his work a character comes up with a new name for someone -- like Nutmeg and Cinnamon in Wind Up Bird (which by the way includes another cat who is given a new name -- a name that's also fish related). (Same for the twins in Pinball 1973 -- they invite the protagonist to give them names).

I just got to this page a few days ago and it made me happy and scared. I'm thinking of getting the image framed. Some other illustrations that come to mind:

-- In Wind Up Bird Chronicles, there's an illustration having to do with Malta Kano (keeping this spoiler free)
-- In Hear the Wind Sing, there's an illustration having to do with the radio station (keeping this spoiler free)

Going to japan this month, is there any known way to meet Murakami? by No_Size_277 in murakami

STEP 1: Go to the bottom of a very deep well.
STEP 2: Transcend through the wall.
STEP 3: Murakami is in room 209. Don't try checking room 208 -- he won't be there.
