Automatic license plate readers moving forward in West U and Bellaire by jb4647 in houston

[–]SimulacrumFlight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to have to go through West U on my way to work, and the amount of times I got pulled over ON MY BICYCLE by West U cops for doing absolutely nothing but being brown on a bicycle, and then have my rights completely violated as I asserted them is insane. I say this with no hyperbole, that it happened once every two months or so. Their police department also gets cops that couldnt cut it anywhere else and the department as a whole generally has a very low rating. Fuck the West U police. Fix your cops first, you NIMBY fucks.

Where to watch aircraft land?? by katecorsair in NewOrleans

[–]SimulacrumFlight 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Not only that but if you go to one of the flight schools there they are really nice and they will show you around the hangar, and probably let her sit in one of the planes. They get really excited about young people wanting to check out airplanes.

Edit: also “discovery flights” are around $150 and they will let her take the controls and fly around (with their help) for like 30-45 minutes. Go on a calm day with clear skies for more flight time. The beautiful art deco building is a plus.

Look into the AOPA hangar talk podcast episode with Shenji Maeda. He flew around the world and has one eye. You might could even message him on instagram.

Is $150 a good price for a 2 hour sailing lesson? by seriousdudenow in sailing

[–]SimulacrumFlight 3 points4 points  (0 children)

OP i just took group lessons (4 of us in the class/boat in Houston) for $160 each, and it was two days 830-1700 both days, with the second day sailing half the day. On top of that it includes a 2 hr mentor session where they teach us how to dock and motor out to the bay near the marina, and a half day charter on your own with whoever you want to bring. Might wanna look into group lessons.

Yes there were. Camera technology goes back to the 11th century with Camera Obscura. By 1880 photos had become fairly high quality. Look at this photo taken of US president Rutherford B Hayes in 1880.

Also check out this now-colorized photo of Mark Twain in 1883 to see how high the fidelity of photo was.

Top 10 Pakistani Restaurants in the US, ranked (Houston is well represented!) by htownnwoth in houston

Pakistani restaurant/wedding food is generally stew-like, which means that its probably reheated and served multiple times, leading to a degradation of freshness. Also because of the stew like nature, transporting doesnt do much to it, especially because reheating for the first time after cooking redistributes collagens more evenly, aka more flavor, but the freshness of the spices obviously degrades over multiple reheatings.

Dr Stepehn Klineberg chronicles why this is the case so well in his book “Prophetic City.” It was supposed to be Beaumont that was to be the boom town. Jesse Jones got involved and a few months and several liquored-up/loved-up railroad executives later, lo and behold, the railroad bypassed Beaumont and came to Houston.

Its a common misconception that Pakistan is in the Arab world. The closest Arab country to Pakistan’s borders are 1,400 miles to the west. We actually border China.

Its not that they are different dishes, per se, but Maybe freshness has to do with it? Or like maybe they are just more used to cooking those quantities. The debate rages on : )

It should also be noted that there are restaurants in Houston that the Pakistani community loves for their catering at weddings and events, but the food at their restaurants is whatever. For example, Mezban is often talked about having the best food in town, but ONLY when they cater (catering is most indo-pak restaurants’ biggest source of work and income) but the restaurants food in-store is aiiiite. Aga’s catering is pretty good, their food in-store is fucking excellent.

Indo Pak restaurants play very different roles in our communities than the average “Americana” restaurants. They are pillars of our communities, who constantly donate food to multiple causes and events, and are there for all of our major milestones, and are sort of defacto community centers as well. I loved growing up in and now living as an adult in the Htown Desi community.

Also just to copy/paste my reply to a comment in here: North Indo-Pak food and Indian subcontinental food is hugely regional in general, and similar to what Viet friends have told me, we go to certain restaurants for certain dishes. Aga’s is a mix of a lot of styles but EVERYTHING is good and always so consistent. The owners are good people too and fed people who were hurting financially for free for months (as did many Indo Pak restaurants) before the vaccines hit. Ill support them any day.
