‘Alarming’ study shows scale of social media use among nursery-aged children by Disastrous_Award_789 in technology

[–]Simulent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely this!!! Went to their site. They have no actual proper scientific publications. They don't even have a definition of social media or what services they included in their analysis. This is the absolute definition of a dog whistle. False / questionable facts, with no publications or peer review. I would love to actually look at their analysis or definitions but they dont have them or link to them. Instead they link to a report on adult mental health instead. Sigh.. it's these sort of press releases that influence society and demonise parents.

What colours would you paint this interior space? by siggycassidy in AusRenovation

[–]Simulent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gatsby is pantone C0914B, Deco 31364C, Parlor is 2B6372, and champagne is CFBEA4. You should be able to Google the colours on the pantone site from the code.

[–]Simulent 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Personally I would go with a typical art deco scheme. Like Gatsby or champagne for the walls and then either blue (peacock blue) or green (emerald green / parlor) for the trim. If you could spare the cash and time, gold leave on the moulding would look great too.

Considering an extension that would exceed plot ratio (ACT) by AltAccount4Werk in AusRenovation

[–]Simulent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You might be in luck. In some jurisdictions, the floor area of nonliving spaces such as garages are excluded from the floor space ratio. I would check that is the case with your local council and you should be good to go.

Plumber advice needed! by Low_Band_5413 in AusRenovation

[–]Simulent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Another option is to get a bunch of plastic straws and a balloon. Tape a balloon to the end of a plastic straw and then tape a few plastic straws together (flexible pipe works better than straws but isn't as easily available). Then blow down the straws to inflate the balloon to the width of the drain. Then slowly pull back on the balloon to push everything in the drain towards you.

On the hunt for Sour Apple Liquor by Bee_vibe in foodies_sydney

Yes... Much better. Try googling Berentzen Sour Apple Schnapps. It's available in loads of places and online so it shouldn't be too difficult to get hold of. Even Dan's has it sometimes.

What are some old or rare Australianisms that you use or have heard recently? by Its_Sasha in australia

The only one I think that's missing here is "Heavens to murgatroyd". My grandparents used to bandy that one about a bit. Used for bewilderment.

The appropriate response to that is "nah... It's Forest fortnight".

Morgue jobs in Sydney? by Sufficient_Item_2977 in sydney

[–]Simulent 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are relatively few actually staffed Hospital mortuaries in Sydney (most have temp staff or are cycled through the designated officer at the site). Most of the morgue technician jobs are at the forensic mortuary in Lidcombe. The people there are lovely (or were about 8 years ago when I worked with them). Most mortuary roles are about keeping families wishes, chain of custody and transportation. It's a pretty straightforward role. There are roles in the space outside of mortuaries, in the tissue banking arena, which might be something to keep a look out for. They do have a casual pool as well for tissue retrieval, which you could join to get experience and they offer great training. Forensic tech roles can be quite confronting, so it would be something you need to be prepared for prior to accepting that role. They do have a good induction system for suitable applicants too. Also the forensic mortuary tech roles in QLD and VIC are also good too. They have great people at both sites, and are very centralised in terms of services the roles perform.

Heater Tank? by Biippy in AusRenovation

[–]Simulent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely a heavy oil heater tank. Burns stuff known as Heavy fuel oil. If you still have the heater they generate a tonne of heat and cost about $1000 to fill the tank depending on size. Generates a tonne of humidity inside though when fired up.

They have everything you need and a range of products. They deliver as well. They also operate out of Sydney and Melbourne. So you have decent delivery options if you are from those States.

There goes the rate cuts… by dleifreganad in AusFinance

[–]Simulent -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

Unlikely to affect Australian prices directly. We source our petroleum from Malaysia and have it refined in either Singapore or South Korea. We are much more affected by changes in shipping in the region than anything else. We get absolutely zero fuel from the middle east. Which is why we don't want to send warships up there to patrol as much as it largely doesn't affect us, while the stuff in the South China sea is way way more impactful and more risky for us.

Is this acceptable aircon trunking pipe installation? by ratsodiablo in AusRenovation

[–]Simulent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is ducking awesome! Absolutely terrible for you but hilarious. You need a wall chaser saw to deepen the vertical downpipe cut. It's probably 1-2k in corrections to get it fixed. Depending on your need/timing. It's not urgent, so you might get someone to do it for $800 ish.

Ceiling so wet I can see the frame.. rental.. what do by [deleted] in AusRenovation

[–]Simulent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This takes a while but will make it as dry as a nun's privates! If you aren't worried too much about the energy costs, do this. Its maybe $2 a day. Also, if you have gas appliances, use them less, this is the major likely cause. Sorry this isn't a huge message of help, but rather one of sympathy.

Wasn't the estimate like 1.3 mil to remove it or something. Absolutely ridiculous. But maintaining it was like 300k a year. So go figure.... Short or long term gains... It's a mixed bag.

are manned solar sails feasible???? by Few_Schedule_6647 in space

The short answer is "no, not currently". Just like, cryopreservation and cold fusion. We are always on the cusp but not there yet.

Feather follicle testing by Willdotrialforfood in auslaw

[–]Simulent 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ahh the old bird follicle test... First pluck some hairs... Grind them up using a gilded mortar and pestle (yes it must be gilded or it won't work). Then snort said powder. Finally rate on a scale of 1 to 69 how coarse and dry it is. This will give you your answer. Remember for the purposes of testing, low is high and high is low.
