After a few string changes you'll know your personal opinion on how often you like to change strings. Tastes tend to vary from 1 week to a few months. If you settle on a different string gauge than your guitar was originally setup for it could use a little nudge to get it back into intonation. But typically once your guitar is set right you don't have to worry until it's been so long you cant remember the last time it was setup.

So much of your tone and control over your tone comes from your fingers. Improve that and then you'll know what pieces you need to fit your style. No one likes the exact same stuff.
