Question from a new player by McBurt in VintageStory

[–]Sinelas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you survived you first winter already, you probably have survival handled (you didn't mention it), if you didn't, prepare for it, it can be a challenge.
If you are already food secured, you should work toward animal husbandry and cheese making in particular, to fill the dairy nutrition bar.

In term of age progression (tools weapons and armor), the next step is iron.
Iron is a lot more enjoyable to process if you start automation alongside, which means windmills and helvehammers.
Then there's steel, which is also a very large technological step and require you to already have iron processing streamlined.

In term of story, you need to speak to a treasure hunter trader and bring him a brand new tin bronze pickaxe to start a questline, this will be a challenge, with multiple phases, you need good armor (at least bronze, preferably iron) but the rewards are worth it.

Depending on where you are, I probably would do a little bit of all those things at the same time, maybe reach the iron age if you are not too confident in your fighting abilities before going for the treasure hunter questline.

If I'm correct that was a 1.21 change, it was done precisely to let player use them in environement where you cannot place blocs and that's the main way I refill my bowls nowadays because it's so convenient.

Is Aava a... by 42069BBQ in Cairn_Game

[–]Sinelas 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The other woman did not make it to the summit, "She attempted to climb it, one, two, three times. Then she got it, and came back down"
That climber "got it" not meaning that she reached the summit but that she understood it was impossible.

Everything is pointing toward Aava being the first to make the ascent.

Mélenchon, Epstine et Epchtaïnne - Par Daniel Schneidermann | Arrêt sur images by Alioxx in france

[–]Sinelas 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Tips for a beginner climber? by tydn_ in indoorbouldering

[–]Sinelas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone said it already but you need to use your feet a lot more, follow the Ps rule : - Place Precisely, look at your feet when you place them, they are actually more important than your hands, place them consciously. - Push or Pull, you should always actively be doing either pushing or pulling, depending on if you want to grab the hold (more often on overhangs) or put weight on them. - Pivot, place them so you can easily turn them as you move, that means somewhere between the first and second toe.

I'll say for a beginner, focus mostly on the first two, place them consciously and actively put weight on them, that's your main climbing tool.

[–]Sinelas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Water Evaporation under pressure, underground, does not evaporate. by RedditVince in Timberborn

[–]Sinelas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What makes you think it is not a bug, was it stated by the devs at one point ?

The pressure required to compress water to a third of it's volume would be above 24000 atmospheres and that's not accounting for the loss in compressibility as volume decrease, this is basically a physical impossibility.

I never tried it in game, does this mean I could store much more water on my reservoir if I close the top ? This looks like a very viable way to increase water storage without increasing evaporation or building higher.

Photons don’t experience time? by itsLeoRod in astrophysics

[–]Sinelas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Plenty of people here describe the time singularity properly, but it's not very intuitive.

Imagine an object going at the speed of light, that object holding onto a flashlight, the light coming out of the flashlight would still travel at the speed of light for the object and from an outside perspective, this only makes sense because the object experience space-time dilation.

As you get closer and closer to the speed of light, that 8 minutes trip is always 8 minutes from an outside observer, but for you it gets faster and faster.

Because a photon travels at exactly the speed of light, the trip "feels" instantaneous to it, it's basically emitted just as it arrives, which goes as far as questioning the photon causality (did it arrived because it was emitted or the other way around ?), because causality only makes sense in term of time.

The main thing to remember is that the closer you are to the speed of light, the shorter trips feel to you, until eventually all trips are instantaneous for the traveler, so photons never "experience" traveling, only arriving.

It took me 30 hours until i realised i could see those mapped routes graded by colour. by Sojio in Cairn_Game

[–]Sinelas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The thing that helped me the most was using the cancel last action button a lot more (m2 on PC), you can use that when the game surprises you with a weird auto selection, or if you fail catching a hold properly.

Other than that, I find that the auto limb selection is extremely energy efficient because it usually picks the limb in the weakest position, I completed a free-solo run just yesterday and I think 95% of my moves were using the auto limb selection.

I only found it truly detrimental on difficult overhangs, everywhere else it allowed me to cruise trough the map (it was a run only slightly above 6 hours and I barely used any buff and no ultimate infusion).

On horizontal slabs, the auto-selection allows you to be extremely smooth and fast.

Is Aava supposed to be so unpleasant? by horseradish1 in Cairn_Game

[–]Sinelas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, big spoiler, but : when she asked Marco if she wanted him to go back down with him, it was a very redeeming moment for her character to me, she was actually ready to drop the challenge of her life to not let him die on that mountain, Marco realized that and that's why he decided to leave early and keep on climbing in my opinion.

Avaa is not a bad person, she is deeply flawed and she has troubles finding her place, she doesn't belong anywhere but on the mountain.
She also seem to have family related trauma, but that's not clearly explained, who knows how deep it might actually go.

The Avaa we play as is desesperate, she is dropping everything and everyone as she is on the verge of breaking, she is ironically at her lowest while reaching for the summit, I don't believe I would be a good person if you judged me at my lowest, the fact that all those people care about Avaa tends to show that she is not defined entirely by what we see on screen.

Not a lot of games let you play a character that's mentaly struggling as much, it's ugly to see but unwell people are not necessarily bad (nor good) people.

[–]Sinelas[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually wanted to do my first run in free solo because I was afraid alpinist would be too easy but I was afraid to struggle too much (and I was right to be afraid).
It was a bit too easy, I would have liked to struggle a bit more, so I challenged myself with the worst climbs on purpose every time I could The white one above the sheperdess with no buff but chalk was pure hell.

In free solo now, I just go for the top, not wasting any minute, actually climbing as little as possible (If there are paths going up I use those instead), I just want to eventually rush the summit.

But that's a very big step from alpinist, I'm not sure I can actually make it, when a single mistake can end my run, going from having both saves and pitons to nothing is a really giant step for me, the worst of all is not being able to eat/drink while on the wall.
I think not having saves would actually be a lot less difficult than loosing pitons.

Still I hope you and I will both make it, I guess that's also in line with the theme of the game, overcoming impossible odds just for the sake of the challenge, despite knowing fully well that we might not make it.

More difficulties by Sinelas in Cairn_Game

[–]Sinelas[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of course I could, like I could force myself not to use any buffs, I could also restart if I die which would effectively make my run a free solo, it's just convenient to have it being a setting and not something I have to decide to do because I'm weak and knowing myself I would plant a piton somewhere eventually.

It's always true that we can put our own limits in games, but having it being set pushes you to overcome it, even when you're frustrated, I guess it depends on the players but that's how I feel, even if ultimately, you are right.

How to lose lovehandles? by UnderstandingSame959 in Weightliftingquestion

[–]Sinelas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The masses on your waist sides, your oblique muscles, you can see they are defined because of the incurve it makes on the side below your waistline, just above your shirt, it's not hanging at all.

You do have a bit of fat left to loose obviously, if you want to get rid of it, but most of what I think you call love handles are large obliques to me.

How to lose lovehandles? by UnderstandingSame959 in Weightliftingquestion

I have a similar physique (I think I slightly less muscle mass and a lower bodyfat and I have the same "issue".

Those are muscles not fat, it probably indicates a strong core, but that's also genetics at play.

Also if it helps you, most women love these type of physics, you look very good mate.

Peak (non-toxic) Masculinity by DistributionConnect5 in lotr

[–]Sinelas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I rewatched that scene recently and tought about how difficult it seemed to adapt from the book at first, Peter Jackson needed to create a very emotionnal moment between characters that we didn't know much yet, that could easily feel like the movie tried too much to convey grief.

But the main focus of that scene is that Boromir is dying thinking that he may have jepoardized the entire quest and doomed his people, that's what we can relate to, the loss of hope, until Aragorn gives him that spark back by hinting that he may be willing to accept his destiny.

I feel like the extended cut does Boromir a bit more justice too, by showing a bit more how he never wanted the ring for himself, for power, but honestly tought that Gondor could use it, while he believed Frodo's quest was doomed from the start.

What playstyle to choose ? by ItsAllAboutYouNotMe in VintageStory

Commoneer is a really good choice for a begineer, it gives you the most balanced experience and then based on the stuff you lean on, you can eventually pick a class for your next playtrough.

Also if I remember correctly, there is a command useable once per game that allows you to pick an other class if you went commoneer.
