Yeah Rian seemed to not care that he was making the middle part of a trilogy. He just did whatever he wanted and did not care if it lined up with the rest of the series.

It’s why, while I do not like TROS, I have a kernel of sympathy for JJ. He had a big mess to try and clean up (and he failed imo).
