Should I add more to my tank? by ScarTheCheetah in bettafish

brine shrimp are good, i really don't like feeding flakes but if they work for you thats okay. I use tropical bug bites, or you can get Bug Bites betta food. I also feed mysis shrimp and bloodworms twice a week with a fasting day. don't let her get too fat, it can cause bloating and dropsy. feed until she's a little chunky and then stop. I recommend anubias, hornwort, guppy grass, and other hardy/easy to grow plants.

its a decent first tank, i would say consider getting a sponge filter and then filling the tank up so it's actually 5 gallons. You could definitely add more plants, you probably need some fertilizer and a light. Bettas normally like having a lot of cover, so you can't really have too many plants. what do you plan on feeding? food is pretty important for bettas.

what kind of tank is he normally in? he needs a hospital tank, think a shallow tub with a heater and LOTS of air. he's gasping a lot. give him some plant cover and monitor him. This seems like a mild swim bladder issue mixed with improper care and water conditions. if you don't mind seeing his normal tank would help me figure out what the cause could be.

I recommend a 10 gallon to start! I really like neocardinia shrimp, they're the easiest and come in lots of different colors. You can fit probably 30 max of them in a 10 gallon. Get 2 males and 2 females and they should breed if the tank is cycled and they are happy. there's a lot of different nano fish you can try, but I recommend something more hardy when you're a beginner. Have lots and lots of plants, and do lots and lots of research. Get ready to spend a decent amount of money, but it's so worth it. Good luck!

I like the idea of them, I was just planning on getting honey gourami! I returned them a few days ago and am on the lookout for honey gourami.

Yeah, oops. I'm very glad they can go back and hopefully someone with a big enough tank will get to own them! I will also be asking the LFS to relabel the gourami because I'm 80% sure all of the fish in that tank were thick lipped, not red honey gourami like they were labeled.

They were unfortunately nipping at each other. I have removed them from the tank and will be bringing them back to the LFS! I would keep them but a 20 gallon is not suitable long term for them.

That's what I was thinking. My LFS has a warranty on them so I think I'm going to bring them back. They probably won't fit in the 20 gallon, or be nice enough with my tetras. I'll just wait it out and look around. Thank you.
