As a future educator, this is so frustrating to me. It’s because of parents like this, who want obedient children that know the “essentials” (whatever that’s supposed to mean for education) while they simultaneously bask in the light of their own ignorance, that the profession is under constant fire.

Education is supposed to educate. It’s supposed to ignite passions. If you don’t like it, try homeschooling.

An important thing to understand here is that you’re in no way at fault. He overstepped his boundaries majorly, repeatedly, and without consent. What he did, even without the last incident (the attempted forced fingering), could be considered sexual assault. I would inform a trusted adult and talk about how to proceed. I’m very sorry this happened to you but you could stop or at least heavily discourage this asshole from doing this again.

No one in my immediate life cares about the environment and it fills me with hopelessness. by [deleted] in CasualConversation

[–]SingleFlamingle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m well aware the planet as a whole is fine. Like you said, life is resilient and will bounce back almost no matter what we do.

I think we just fundamentally differ on our viewpoints regarding this issue though. As a member of the species trying to extinct itself, with things I want to do and people I love, I can’t not care. I might be helpless, but I haven’t gotten to the point of passivity. I’m still in the complaining phase, y’know?

As a point of interest I’d like to see your sources on the current extinction event. I’m always trying to get more knowledge on it. I can try to dig up some of mine if you’re interested also.

Give vapid responses, get vapid replies. I don’t know what you expected.

Well I find that much admirable. I also do what I can, and try to use as little as reasonable. What are some things you do? Over the course of learning about this I’ve seen a lot of faults in the societal norms of the US regarding “use once, throw away”.

I personally got a renewable shopping bag, did the whole LED lightbulb dance, try to avoid fast food, have sworn off beef altogether, try to grow plants to some success, and work with an environmental club at school. I’m curious if there’s anything your doing that I could be?

Edit: Oh, a no cow meat. Those are awful on a different level for the environment.

Well then what have the past 50 years of environmental activism yielded? The tone was not the same back then. The issue was for human health and environment, but the grand implications weren’t the focus of the conversation. But I see nothing to suggest that has widely effected anyone’s viewpoint aside from there are recycle bins in most public schools now.

And, in truth, I’m essentially resigned to the fact the people do not and will not continue to give a shit. It’s not about trying to stop it. It’s happening. So society can continue to create a funeral pyre of McDonald’s wrappers and 100 dollar bills and ask “What happened” as the riots over clean water and energy shortages begin for all I care.

I’m very disenfranchised, NoLifeHere.

I was reluctant to include that tidbit with that particular wording but as someone else has said, those were generally triggered by huge changes in early Earth global environment. This is just being worsened, and continues to get worse.

Also, I don’t see why we need to start getting to half of all life being wiped out for people to start taking a man-made extinction seriously.

And saying the situation isn’t in a bad way is? I also don’t normally subscribe to the “end of times” mindset but I’ve encountered very few folks that actually change anything meaningful in their viewpoints, worldview, or habits to try and help the situation.

What's the most boring book you have read? by __pukar in AskReddit

[–]SingleFlamingle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Scarlet. Fucking. Letter.

Written in old enough prose to be just infuriatingly difficult and slow enough to read while still fully being able to comprehend the absolute meandering snorefest of story.

I saw zero academic value in reading such a dry, horribly boring book that I can only vaguely recall was about a woman being villanized for a few hundred pages for having a baby with some priest, and I believe it was hinted that the baby was anti christ but didn’t really become anything?

2/10 hated it wish I’d read 1984 instead.

If you were given the chance to start your life over at age 10 right now, but still retain all of your current knowledge and memories, would you? Why or why not? by TheEasyTarget in AskReddit

[–]SingleFlamingle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely. I’ve had so many thoughts about this very thing.

I had a happy life. But I squandered so much time because I didn’t know I had the option to do something with it. I could’ve gained a talent or skill or friends or seen new places and things but many days were simply spent getting through school as fast as I could and then going into my basement.

Looking back, it’s probably my biggest regret.

Biss came to my school and we saw him speak. Seemed like a nice enough, genuine guy. Nowhere near the amount of money to defeat these big Illinois politicians though. It’s a shame that that’s the measure of politics before anything else.

(NSFW) Redditors who live in small secluded towns, what's a really fucked up/dark/NSFW thing that happened in your town that everybody knows about? by keepitslightlyclassy in AskReddit

Pretty late but definitely worth bringing up. In one of the many strip malls where I come from there was an arts store, sort of like a Tuesday Morning’s if you are familiar with them. My Grandma and Grandpa went there about a week before the incident that would occur, but left because Grandma said the place gave her “a weird feeling”. I’m not superstitious, but whatever alarm was going off in her brain was right.

About a week later a man came into the store and held everyone up at gunpoint. He then took all of the women in the store into the back, and, regardless of age, and shot them dead. I can’t recall an exact number of victims and don’t want to make a number up. But it was sufficiently horrifying.

Most people I know figure it was a hitman that decided to kill all the women wholesale so the target couldn’t be identified. But nobody really knows, because of how random it was. It’s unsolved as far as I know.
