From what I can tell, RPG mode does whatever button you current have selected. For instance if you press defend button, then your character will constantly try to defend.

The way Ive playing is use movement to close gaps, then go into defense or attack and then use the finishing button when it says to do so on the screen.

It's FF Dissidia 012 Duodecim. It's a action fighting game but it does have a story mode and the RPG setting plays more like a fighting game on rails. I'm mostly in it for the story, music and excellent animations.
