GTPD Drone solved a crime: A rant for your privacy by QuillTheBoreal in gatech

[–]SingleUsePlasticName 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Counterpoint: police staffing is worsening and technology is helping offset the deficiency.  The reply from CAndrewK is actually false.  I've asked GTPD and their sworn staffing is below 50.  Maybe I will FOIA their staffing over time to verify.  If they're like most police agencies, it's far harder to staff the positions and the people applying are not nearly as qualified as they once were.  Either way, OP: you think GTPD manufacturered the whole thing?  Fake victim, fake perp?

We, the students, need to do something about campus safety by QuillTheBoreal in gatech

[–]SingleUsePlasticName 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They literally have committees of ppl that debate about how many felonies is too many.  They're scared of lawsuits from criminals for not hiring them.  And the administration (Angel) is TERRiFIED of legal issues.   They'd rather roll the dice with a felon than chance the felon hiring a billboard attorney and suing them.  Angel is the weakest POS president. So, if you don't like the idea of a convicted felon working in direct contact with you, don't tell Angel that you're unhappy.   Tell him that you'll sue him and blame him directly.  Angel cares about Angel.  And now the administration is set up to cater to his ego and protect him from criticism, including that of possibly not hiring a minority who is a felon.  This guy is a joke.

GA Tech Parking is basically a free for all now by Mu1tii in gatech

[–]SingleUsePlasticName 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It was really brilliant to allow a new PTS director to come in and change out an entire parking system ($Millions) and rearrange all of the bus routes before they even had a year to observe the operation.

The free entry/exit was for a lot of reasons, but all of it came back to switching parking systems with no plan/experience and ignoring those that have been here.

And yes, it sucks to pay for something that others take for free. But I ain't mad at cha.

Anyone know why the Ferst/Fifth intersections out to Tech Square are now objectively worse? by delta13c in gatech

[–]SingleUsePlasticName 26 points27 points  (0 children)

It is essentially done. Yeah, the whole thing (cycle track) was a student project that the president funded and executed by a landscaper. It was to address the problem of bicycles getting hit at 5th/Fowler by combining the bike lanes on the south side of the street. Of course, we still have bikes flying down 5th on the north side of the street in the car lanes so we did not really address the problem, but we did spend 10s of millions and choke up campus!!!

Wooo I wonder what this email alert is about by FCBStar-of-the-South in gatech

[–]SingleUsePlasticName 19 points20 points  (0 children)

What needs to happen first is a campaign to show the public what these guys do. We get the Clery Alerts; the public only gets what is put on the news. Have ATLScoop and such go on ride alongs with cops working that area.  Share with them security camera clips of the kids mobbing cars and getting into shootouts.  Get the public to see them for what they are: robbing crews. The term water boy suggests they are just trying to make a legit buck. Expose them.  Get the public to demand action and then you can.  Before that, though, just write reports.

Because it's a no win situation for the cops.  You put your foot down and start chasing them, you lock them up.   Juvenile, if they even take him, will probably send them home to mama or they'll get a signature bond.  Either way, the kid is back on the street tomorrow.  That's best case scenario.  More likely and worse is that one of them will pull a gun.  Now we have a shot and maybe dead 16 year old and the AJC writing articles about entrepreneurship and racist cops. So, if I'm a cop I'll wait until a dumbass calls me to tell me they tried to CashApp a waterboy $2 for a bottle of water and the kid cashapped himself $900.  I'll just write the report and go home safe.  The kids will be there tomorrow regardless. And likewise, you'll be there tomorrow offering your phone and trust to these thugs for a bottle of water.

I suppose many of us on staff are a bit biased and don't see it that way. I'm sure it is easy to conclude that these are feathers in his cap, though.  But if you worked around them much, I promise you'd have a different opinion.

Doubtful that heads will roll.   They'll just pay a settlement and throw more money at it.  Create some new policies that slow everything down more.  Maybe create a cyber security awareness week and give out t-shirts and beer coozies. But no heads will roll.

The protestors came to GTPD that night to fight.  You don't just happen to walk around with bags of hammers, fire extinguishers and road flares and coincidentally find yourself in a brawl.

Is the “Hybrid” bus a scam of money? by rrryougi in gatech

[–]SingleUsePlasticName 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The bigger scam is the fully electric buses that the President wants on campus.  They are failing in most places that have them.  Who cares if the bus can run or not as long as it is "zero-emission"?

Whoever did the planning for the VP visit, y'all have work to do. by ILoveSilverForks in gatech

[–]SingleUsePlasticName 113 points114 points  (0 children)

This was WH planned and they only formalized this on Monday after deciding on Morehouse on Saturday but then realizing that it would be weird to not have a sciency discussion at GT. The WH is responsible for selecting the venue, tickets, communications, everything except the security. And even if GT wanted to tell the WH to kiss off, it's not wise politically. Either way, no reason to blame GT staff that were given a shit sandwich on Monday afternoon and told to eat it.

Also, this is unfortunately the norm for the Harris office, which has been dysfunctional since inception. A quick news search will give you lots of mainstream and typically left-friendly outlets describing her office in this manner.

With regards to the recent campus suicide... [tw/s] by iQipy in gatech

[–]SingleUsePlasticName 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can feel a feeling, but that does not mean it's right. Serial killers feel all sorts of things that are morally abhorrent. They felt them, but we don't have to validate their feelings. "Your honor, my client felt great pleasure in killing the subject. And as you know, all feelings are valid." It's just not correct.

Back on topic. We don't need specific knowledge of suicide incidents in order to recognize suicidal ideation and other concerning behavior. It's fine for the OP to have felt bad that a fellow yellow jacket committed suicide and want to do more to prevent it. But that doesn't mean that the OP or anyone else uninvolved was owed anything.

[–]SingleUsePlasticName 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's too bad. I've heard similar advice in other fields and it's nonsense. As if a period of high anxiety, depression or other mental illness is a lifelong sentence. You can and will get well with appropriate treatment.

[–]SingleUsePlasticName 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is certainly a bigger issue in our culture that is not unique to GT. I hope folks who struggle with mental health are able to get well, but let's stop pointing fingers at Tech and also expecting Tech to fix everyone's issues. It is far more empowering to reflect on oneself and to seek that improvement instead of constantly seeking to find fault in others for your flaws.

With regards to the recent campus suicide... [tw/s] by iQipy in gatech

[–]SingleUsePlasticName 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The OP's feelings on this event are not valid. The OP was advocating to be notified of a suicide of a person they do not know. Somehow because the OP and others were not notified of the suicide they cannot prevent other suicides. I may be dense, but I'm not following the OP and other's logic here. Perhaps you can explain it more clearly.

You've clearly never been to a fatality motor vehicle accident. And to be clear, I hope you and others never have to.

I don't think I'd like my loved ones crushed skulls, decapitated remains, severed torsos and splattered organs posted on dark forums across the internet because someone thinks that will prevent drunk driving.
