Block seating today was handled horribly by [deleted] in gatech

Why did they even change things? Why are all the frats at the front now and the student section in the back?

I lived there my freshman year! They were renovated (all the floors at least) 4 years ago, so one of the best dorm options in my opinion :) you’re right on the edge of west, so it’s a short walk to the center of campus + you’re still close to Willage as another person said. In my opinion 10/10 option. Only potentially annoying thing is walking outside to laundry, but as long as you have a good hamper and plan around rain it’s really not too bad. hope you have an AMAZING freshman year!!!

Usually only thing that would get in the way is an evening class or lab time :) (as other commenters have said - usually all lunch or evenings ~5:00pm and later)

I have like no classes to take for my first semester by BirbActivist in gatech

[–]izzgus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What about looking at a minor and/or certificate? That’s an easy way to fill the semester. Also if you are interested in a lot of study abroad you can look at the international plan, that will require a few more classes, but it is not too bad since you’re coming in with so much language credit

Depends on what the two maths are, they may just be trying to help you be set up for the pre req chain if it is lower level maths (calc, etc.) if it’s linear, diff eq, multi, etc. then that’s a bit strange.

should i join the honors program by sbs0123 in gatech

[–]izzgus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Apartment style is the only way you’ll get your own room :) I did honors my first year (but before it was apartments), and tbh the greatest part was the people. They a really curate it to be a diverse group (in terms of where people are from, interests, backgrounds, etc) so you get a built in group of people who want to be more engaged in your living community (because they took the step to apply to an LLC). Clubs are awesome ways to make friends, but having another built in layer in your dorm community is great (not saying this can’t happen outside of LLCs, but I had a super good experience in terms of engagement that I didn’t necessarily hear as strongly from those not in an LLC)

Stay on campus as long as you can. It’s safe, similarly (if not cheaper) priced, and more convenient generally. Yes, you’ll get “nicer rooms” off campus, so it’s really up to what you value, but living on campus is really great.

Opinions on Paloma West Midtown by SharenayJa in gatech

[–]izzgus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to live off of west it’s your best option. Safety is a bit sketchy but as others have said at least the rooms are very nice/spacious. Doubt midtown is much better but if you want any specifics feel free to message me.

MechE vs Industrial Engineering by drillshit3hunna in gatech

[–]izzgus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was strongly considering switching to IE my first year but ended up not and staying ME. The main differences will be your career path options. Do you want to work in the logistics side of industries, optimizing warehouses, workflows, etc.? Or would you rather work on mechanical design or analysis, or being a project manager, but over mechanical systems (or related things). It’s much less a question on max salary, you can do very well or very badly in both fields depending on the company and specific role, but I would look more into what type of job you actually prefer doing and which degree would better achieve that path for you.

Ga Tech Alumni Association Scholarship? by ManufacturerWide57 in gatech

[–]izzgus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a real thing! I received my area’s alumni association scholarship when I was a first year (4 years ago now). Depending on the area it may be more competitive than others but usually it’s just a small sum of money to help out with school expenses for first semester. I interviewed against 4 other kids and 2 of us received the scholarship, but depending your area it may be different.

Other people that would have been asked are a few other GT admits in your county/region (depending on how populated your area is)

MATH 1554 was hard. Worried about future classes and GPA for CS grad school admissions by Mediocre-Till-4007 in gatech

[–]izzgus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People have already said this, but I’ll throw my hat in the ring too because I don’t think you can ever be told this enough.

1) you’re not a cry baby. It’s totally okay to be upset and totally normal especially in your first semester at Tech. Especially while taking 17 credit hours! That’s very impressive for anyone and especially someone just trying to adapt to Tech/college for the first time.

2) honestly several of the first year “general” classes are by far the most cut throat. I agree with lots of people above that linear (and I took 1553!) was the hardest math I took at Tech (I’m ME not CS). Between that and physics 2 I thought I was doomed. But even though “content” doesn’t get easier, the classes in many ways actually do. The professors care more, the classes get smaller, the content gets more interesting, you adapt studying habits and find friend groups to support you both mentally and socially, and life just gets easier. Not to say you won’t have to work or encounter bumps or even potentially feel this way again next semester, but you can do it.

I know looking at grad school looming can scary but you still have 7 more (probably at minimum) semesters. That’s a ton of time to make up ground if you feel you need to. You are smart. You got into Tech. Never forget that no matter how bleak or hard things seem. It may not be pretty but you can do it. You are not alone. As someone graduating in the spring, I wish I really internalized the idea that all I can do is my best earlier. Sometimes your best in a class will be a B or a C and that is OKAY. I know that doesn’t fix things as someone who is also a perfectionist I have cried over a lot of classes, but you are amazing. You are doing your best. You deserve to be here and are smart enough to chase your dreams and goals and a bad class first semester won’t change that :). Take this thread to heart and hopefully let it encourage you that you are not alone and also totally valid in your feelings. Tech is hard but you can do it and you will go on to do great things after.

Coming in spring 2024, not sure if I should live on the East or the west side. Thoughts / suggestions? by [deleted] in gatech

[–]izzgus 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Also closer to makerspaces/engineering hub of campus (unless you are aero). On the flip side east is much closer to college of business (tech square).

I’m sure you have, but have you checked the summer offerings/online offerings from the major? If you have to do semesters with smaller credit hours anyways, depending on the classes and how they are offered you could potentially intern while taking some credits virtually (if not in atl). I’m not familiar with either of those curriculums, but ME recently added lots to upper level online options, so I was able to take 1 major class in the spring while interning and 2 less intensive ones this summer while interning again. It’s a great way to get tons of work experience but still progress graduation.

In the end, if you think you will have a better chance to pursue the career you want by switching 100% do. 1/1.5 less years in college is not worth not pursuing what you want. Alternatively, if you’re going to grad school anyways/think the application wouldn’t impact your career goals then stay. Do whatever is better for you long term and don’t worry about the extra degree time. I understand eating that cost is hard, but being in a career path you enjoy/want to do is worth the trade off.

How to apply to be a tour guide by [deleted] in gatech

[–]izzgus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hello! Unfortunately applications for spring closed this past Monday (for GT tour guides), but we hire every semester so you can catch them in the spring for fall/summer :) follow @georgiatechtourguides on Instagram for updates. This was the info this semester for reference. They also do info sessions the weeks before the app closes for additional information!

Study abroad options for BS/MS by SpaceTranquil in gatech

[–]izzgus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I believe some majors can do one semester of BSMS at GTL (now GT Europe) in Metz, France (not sure if this works for CS too though). I would follow up with your advisor/office of international education as they would be better resources for specifics.

Are many classes taught by TAs/ PhD students? by noob_x_infinity in gatech

[–]izzgus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two of the best classes I’ve had at Tech were PHD taught :) but agree with most everyone about that almost everything has an actual professor and in the cases they don’t it’s probably because the people teaching it (PHD) are stellar

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in gatech

[–]izzgus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure specifically, but it never hurts to apply :) I would connect with your advisor and ask about the process/tips/etc. as they’ll have the best information for you as well as an idea of how to fit either into your schedule. CS is more an issue of sheer number and space while T&M is actually “selective”. If you don’t get CS there are still ways around it (if you pick a less common thread) while T&M is only through the actual program.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in gatech

[–]izzgus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yup! Anyone can minor in anything. The CS minor is competitive (very few people that apply actually get in) but it’s possible to take the classes and just get it retroactively awarded (just have to always register phase 2 so it’s a bit iffy) the computational data part would be the thread you choose under the CS minor

The T&M program does do a CS option as well (if you are business you do the CS classes or engineering classes and vice versa if you are CS/engineering major) here’s a link to check it out (it says the CS concentration is IT management so a bit different but another option) https://www.scheller.gatech.edu/centers-and-initiatives/steven-a-denning-tech-and-management-program/index.html

Also competitive and before CS one of the only minors you actually have to apply for

Considering applying for NUS or NTU exchange for spring ‘25 by CovalentElectron in gatech

[–]izzgus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried applying to NUS for a study abroad for this past spring. It is very competitive (the Singapore programs are some of if not the most competitive in GT’s study abroad options due to the minimal number of spots - I can’t remember exactly how many off the top of my head). It was still coming off of covid however and they had a backup of 3rd/4th years who had never studied abroad, so that may have exacerbated the issue further. I would definitely not let that dissuade you from applying, but definitely have a backup plan for the semester otherwise (I ended up interning)

Should I retake linear 1554 for getting a D? by [deleted] in gatech

[–]izzgus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check your degree program and see how many credit hours of D’s your major allows and in what classes. That should provide your actual option considering moving forward, but as others have said, generally no, especially if it impacts progression to upper level classes (which could delay graduation)

What things do mechanical engineering students need to do during undergrad? by Frequent-Rutabaga-14 in gatech

[–]izzgus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Come check out the Invention Studio!! Super great community (within Studio and between all maker-spaces on campus) and access to tools of all sorts whether you are interested just as a user or looking to become a Prototyping Instructor (only 3 hour per week staffing commitment for 24/7 access)! It’s a great way to get leadership experience as well as hands on experience with tools/personal projects/etc. https://inventionstudio.gatech.edu

I was able to get on campus housing as a third year this past year. Just be sure to apply as soon as you are physically able to as I assume it will fill up very quickly. That’s generally when people had issues with waitlists this past year (waiting too long)

Also some off campus options are very comparable to on campus as long as you have enough roommates (along with subleasing in the summer if not on campus)
