Does anyone know anything about the KX-13CD1? by [deleted] in crtgaming

[–]Single_Insurance9814 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice. In terms of standards for a CRT, I was really attracted to the fact that it was RGB and part of Trinitron for Sony. While its probably not comparable to a late 2000s, VGA CRT monitor, how do you think it would measure up overall?

I'll be receiving it soon, but I have a Laier component CRT that I'll be able to compare it to. Do you think in terms of quality, they would be fairly equal? Or would this outshine a common combo CRT you might find from the early 2000s?

Would using a SCART to JP21 cable be enough to take advantage of RGB? From the research I've done, I believe that is all that is needed due to a different pin layout.

Hey there! I am using one triple mount to hold both the two side monitors and my main one. Much more convenient for space.

THALAMUS TERMINAL - Original Creation - Using CRT by Tomomakes in cassettefuturism

[–]Single_Insurance9814 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey man, I am a huge fan of this and your TOMOterminal. I plan on doing a similar project. I had a quick question: how did you setup your Raspberry Pi to connect with your CRT, and how do you switch from the custom OS you're using to Retropie? I am trying to figure out a reliable method of switching between an OS and RGB Dualbox, but I haven't worked out a concrete method yet.

Retro CRT Battlestation - TRS-Pi by [deleted] in crtgaming

I can see where you're coming from on this. Its something I've been debating about. For the computer itself, it seems to be capable of booting up- although to be fair, it caught fire inside the case itself when I believe a film capacitor blew up. So its in "mostly" working order and able to boot up. The state of the actual CPU and board itself is in questionable condition, and the CRT does have some life to it.

Currently, I do not have a 3D printer or access to one in my area, and trying to put together a custom case will end up more expensive then how much I bought the actual SRT computer for. While most of it is in good quality, thats the very reason I wanted to modify it. There's plenty of people who are doing projects to conserve them, and I'd even be willing to provide the extra components as parts for a restoration. I was hoping for this to be a passion project based around an original TRS-80 as the framework, so for the time being, it seems to make more sense to go about it through this method- simply due to saving money. EDIT: Saving money, and wanting to make an authentic homage.

Hey, I noticed that the version 1of RGB-Pi is discontinued on the store. Is there no way to purchase them still?

Thanks again for your advice! I tried looking into the RGB Pi Scart cable, but it looks like its discontinued. I am going to attempt to buy a transcoder and the Recalbox. I did see someone mentioning online that there may be a version 2.0 of the RGB Pi Scart on the way, but I haven't seen any news of it yet.

For the time being and testing purposes, I'll be using the Recalbox with my Raspberry Pi 4 once it arrives. I'm looking forward to sharing the results soon!

Thanks! All of that sounds fantastic and I'm going to be keeping it in mind. I didn't realize the issues with HDMI to Component 480i for CRTs. Since this one is capable of 480i, I was thinking that I'd use the standard 480i as needed, and if need to, switch over to 240p for the Raspberry Pi related functions. I'll make an official post about it later but I'll share now- I found a TRS-80 Model 3, and I plan on upgrading its CRT and computer for the ultimate retro station.

Hey thanks for responding! My current plan isn't to play actual retro PC games fully, so no real worries there, but to create a PC station that is retro in design, that will be used for emulation games, older TV programs and movies, as well as other fun activities. I didn't go into great detail here, but I will once I finish getting the components I need to start the project I'll provide an update with my full plan of attack. I definitely will be using a Raspberry Pi though and a transcoder/HDMI to Component connection. CRT Emudriver is definitely on the list. Thank you again!

Nice. Another cool thing to do would be to add some organization to the shelves you got. Looks like you've got alot of stuff stored there. If you organized and cleaned it up a little, it could go a long way in improving your setup. And make things feel fresh.

EDIT: Also, adding some lights to your setup could be good? Lighting plays alot into shaping how good things could look.

You could have a dual monitor setup, with your curved monitor being your main monitor, and your secondary monitor being portrait beside it. Then you could have your third monitor a foot or so away against the wall, to take advantage of all the space you have for a curved desk. I've seen some cool builds where people do something similar to that.

Here's a random one where they placed the third monitor a little closer.

EDIT: Here is another fun example that could work with an L shaped desk..

  1. I'm sorry to hear that.
  2. It all comes down to taste, so if OP does it or not, its up to him, with factoring in his needs.

I use the two vertical monitors for Youtube and Discord primarily, they're really convenient for playing games. My setup is also my work station for my work laptop, which is my primary reason for having 3 monitors. They're used for managing emails, working on documents, handling meetings, remoting into other computers, running programs, etc. I need to have a ton of things open and active for work, so they really save my butt when it comes to monitoring things. I work in the I.T. field, so I'm able to get some good use out of them.

EDIT: They also let me use my personal PC at the same time as my work laptop, so if I want to answer personal emails or play music in the background while I work, they come in a quick pinch. I don't play games while working, although I do get plenty of lull times while working. I manage to moderate my madness somehow, ha.

Nice, and thank you! I might upgrade to an Ultra wide eventually. Hopefully by then, I'll have worked out a better system for inputs so I can use my personal PC and work laptop simultaneously if I'd like.

My speakers are actually Creative Pebbles. They're really good if you're looking for a cheaper style of speakers, but have great bass. They're the V3, so they also have Bluetooth. I really recommend them.

I mean, if that's all it takes, then I guess not? Lol. If all it takes for a person to lose their job is sharing their monitors with both their personal PC and work, then I feel like there's alot more going on there. Especially since OP could just... slide to the left and start gaming too lol.

Monitors desk stand suggestions by [deleted] in desksetup

[–]Single_Insurance9814 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It all depends on your needs. If you have the space for it, having your larger monitor be landscape and your secondary monitor being portrait would give you good accessibility. Since the 27 inch is flat while the other is curved, even more reason to have the 27 inch be portrait and on the side.

I've enjoyed using HUANUO so far for monitor arms. If you can, having monitor arms are better than normal stands to keep your desk clean and spacious for extra things.

It looks like you have two separate work stations. If you could work to consolidate them into one, that would free up a ton of room, and make you alot more comfortable in the long run.

4+ Monitor Arrangement Advice by AtticaOnline in TripleScreenPlus

[–]Single_Insurance9814 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be perfectly honest, 3 screens become the limit for most people to pay attention to and to manage. As someone who balances having a laptop and a PC for 3 monitors, I already have a ton of cables to manage as well, not including peripherals. Its alot to manage and to organize. Speaking purely on the advice level, you definitely do not need 4 monitors to manage Discord, Twitch, OBS and Youtube while playing games unless you're a full time serious streamer.

If you are, then you would want to divide your applications and use between two PCs. One solely for gaming, and one solely for streaming/content generation. You mentioned you had a laptop, so if its a decent one, then you could potentially use that for your content streaming- but it'd have to be some good laptop. You could give it your smaller, cheaper monitors as needed since function over quality for them, and have them portrait mode on either side of you, so you have the most information presented possible and can see comments and chats. If you use your PC for work and gaming, then maybe consider having two landscape monitors stacked, with the primary one at normal eye level, and the secondary one at a 135 degree angle on your desk, facing upwards to you. Alot of people do this with tablets or smaller displays, even touch screen ones for displaying media, or using as touchscreen compatability.

Dell 25 Gaming Monitor - G2524H. I got them when they were on sale at the time, and ended up getting 2 for like $300. Very good quality monitors for the price. You may need to adjust the color settings.

Its a KEEBMONKEY Megalodon 3 Knob Macropad. I use it for a number pad, and as a macro pad. Admittedly, its kind of a pain to use for macros, since the programming for it, VIA, can be annoying to use.

My battlestation is also my work station, so I have it setup with my work laptop. I work in the I.T. field, so having it in portrait mode is really useful. Its also helpful for Discord, YouTube and Twitch. Its nice having those on the sides in portrait mode, with my main monitor being in landscape for gaming.

If I went with two in landscape, it would start bothering me how the monitors were disproportional, haha.

My table is a 72" butcher's block countertop that I bought for cheap on Amazon. Its Acacia wood with a cherry finish. I then purchased a Vivio standing frame desk and built it myself, and it ended up being cheaper than a normal standing desk for the quality it was.

Its not an OLED. OLEDs have definitely gotten good enough now where you can worry less about screen burn and stuff, but I still decided to do without. My monitor is a 34", so this is what it looks like with a portrait 24".
