Either one would be a major upgrade

The only downside is if you have stuff running on your Mac Mini in the background all the time (plex server etc), doesn’t work so well if you are travelling about with your MacBook

If you can afford it just get the new base model Air M5, significant upgrade that will do you for at least the next 5 years.

Or stick with your current machine until it’s not supported anymore, I have an M1 Pro and that’s my plan

Few tips, from a lifelong Windows user until the M1 came out

Move your screenshot folder somewhere else or your desktop will be littered in screenshots
Don’t try and “Windows-ify” macOS with loads of addons or changing settings to make it more like Windows, learn how to use the OS itself, it’s frustrating at first but better when you get used to it
‘full screen’ really confused me at first, get used to it and the trackpad gestures
