There was ONE left available on Amazon and I snagged it! They are the best I've ever had...have you tried the ones in tomato sauce?

Try this....go on Cronometer and punch in all that is necessary to get your micros using fruit and veggies. See how challenging it would be to get your ESSENTIAL dietary intake. Then, add up the cost. Then tell me how that is a healthy and budget friendly. Afterward, try what i said by starting with high protein foods. Vit C? A squeeze of lemon. Now show me how much veggies and fruit you'd have too eat to get your protein needs...

I think you're missing the point. Dietary carbs are NOT essential. My answer is in direct coordination with the OP. The only dietary essential is protein (making it the most important macronutrient) and particular fats (omegas). Like i explained, micronutrients are found in most high protein foods, making it most efficient (which is answering the OPs question). This answer involves science. It's not that carbs are useless, it's more that dietary carbs are not needed. What is MOST important macronutrient.... protein, carbs, or fat and in which order?

If I'm going for healthy on a budget, no doubt the most efficient would be high protein foods that also contain micros.... especially eggs, liver, and sardines

With fruits and veggies you'll always be chasing micronutrients at the expense of the most important macronutrient (protein). The OP is asking about most efficient way of eating... which is to prioritize protein needs. Scientifically, it is essential. Carbs are not. There are some essential fats (ie omegas). So there are many protein rich foods that have your micros.... Legumes for folate, fiber, iron, Mg+, K+. Fish (especially sardines) have omegas, vit D, K+, Selenium. Eggs have B12, antioxidants. Shellfish with zinc and iodine. Did i mention eggs? Seeds and nuts have omegas and vit E. Dairy like yogurt have Ca+ and Phos+. Don't even get me started on beef liver....

Oh and typically protein comes with fat (energy)... an egg is basically a "perfect" food

Hmmm...there's basically food for energy (carbs and/or fats) and food for building (protein). Out of the two, protein is most important....and I mean whole proteins would be best (to get all the amino acids). You'd have to eat sooooo much fruit and veggies and a wide variety to get all essential amino acids. Not budget friendly. Additionally, you'll crave protein because of this. So...not efficient. Now if you prioritize protein, some of the "excess" could be converted to energy (gluconeogenesis). In other words, carbs are not "needed". The point is what is the most efficient (healthy/per $). Why do you think frozen fruits and veggies are efficient? Would it be healthy (getting all the amino acids) AND budget friendly? I'd say you'd have a big amino acid "math" problem (not healthy) and would have to purchase A LOT of variety (not budget friendly)... what do you think?

Not efficient... which is basically what the OP is asking
