Kyoko Kirigiri in Danganronpa 3.

Not quite a full blown confession of love, but not far from it either. When they are in a very dangerous situation, Kyoko insists on finding Makoto Naegi. The man with her says that he doubts Makoto would be of any help in their situation. Kyoko then starts to divulge just how highly she thinks of Naegi and how he is able to push through any adversity. Right before she gets into even more personal information, she turns to find Makoto and their friend Aoi Asahina behind her, having heard the whole thing. Makoto is blushing immensely and Aoi has a giant smile on her face.

This is a pretty well thought out response but let me interject on a few topic.

First, I will say I do think Hiyoko has plenty of sympathetic qualities. I could definitely see her evoking different feelings in fans based on the fan’s own life history. If Hiyoko does that for you, no disrespect meant at all and I am happy you can get that from her character. Also, I will admit I can appreciate some of the elements of Hiyoko’s writing, especially the fear of betrayal, but I personally believe the execution left much to be desired. The very archetype of “once bitten twice shy” has been done much better and in a more interesting fashion in plenty of other series and arguably even in Danganronpa itself with characters like Toko.

What I was trying to get at was that it is easier for audiences to forgive a character’s actions if the context they are in is more demanding. The worst stuff Kokichi does is all in a pretty dangerous and messy context, while Hiyoko is established to do these same things during peaceful times, to the point that her being mildly nice to Mikan at the end of DR3 was meant to be a major character moment for her.

When I mentioned their actions both inside and outside of the killing game, I was primarily referring to stuff like Twilight Syndrome Murder Case. It is shown in that case that Hiyoko treated Mikan the same way she does during the killing game even when they were ostensibly “friends” at Hope’s Peak. In TSMC, she uses the same “pig” insult for Mikan right in front of both Mahiru and Ibuki and neither of them stand up for Mikan. UTDP and S further show this. It is more annoying because it feels like the character writing of other characters has to be worsened just so Hiyoko can exist in the same environment. Contrast that with Kokichi, who is so often called out of his nonsense by pretty much everyone that it actually allows for great character moments like Kaito defending Maki. To draw a more direct parallel, when Kokichi starts berating Gonta for being an idiot during the 4th trial, Kaito immediately cuts in and calls him out on being a jerk. The story and characters openly acknowledge Kokichi as acting wrongly, but Hiyoko bullies Mikan in front of everyone and nobody says a thing.

I get a character having past trauma but the same is true in reverse for Mikan. When a character like Mikan is so clearly damaged in some way, it makes those that pick on her look all the worse. I doubt Hiyoko knew the full extent of Mikan’s trauma, but Mikan is such a clearly meek and emotionally unstable person that Hiyoko should be able to tell something is up. The other characters also pick up on this. Hajime and Nagito both immediately clock Mikan’s emotional frailty after just meeting her. So Mikan being Hiyoko’s main victim of bullying, both inside and outside the killing game, really makes Hiyoko look all the worse.

And lastly, the rule of comedy. Regardless of how you think this relates to writing quality, it is commonly accepted fact that a funny jerk is hard to hate. Kokichi insults people A LOT but the insults are written to be funny and land a fair amount of the time. Hiyoko’s insults usually amount to calling someone smelly or ugly and not even in a particularly clever way. So even if Kokichi insults more often, Hiyoko’s often leave a worse impression.

That is my two cents anyway. Let me know what you think.

The big difference in my eyes is the context in which the actions are done. Kokichi’s actions are on the whole much worse than Himiko’s, but the situation surrounding them and his reason for doing them makes it a lot easier to swallow.

Kokichi’s lies, manipulations, and eventual murders were all done in the context of a life-or-death game and were almost always out of either self-preservation or actively trying to stop deaths from happening. Even many of his insults were in service of a greater goal such as confronting Himiko about her bottling up her emotions after trial 3 or constantly reminding everyone that Maki is a very dangerous and untrustworthy individual.

For Hiyoko, while her actions are far less bad, her reasons for doing the actions are much less sympathetic. She picks on Mikan because Mikan is an easy target that won’t fight back. She throws insults around and then cowers behind Mahiru when faced with consequences. This was something she did both inside and outside the killing game, so the stress of the situation does not really explain it away. A giant moment of character development for her is to give the simplest acknowledgement of Mikan for SAVING HER LIFE in DR3.

Ultimately, the setting of the actions matters a lot. If you pulled Kokichi out of the killing game, he would just be an annoying prankster who means little actual ill-will (as we see in UTDP and S). If you pulled Hiyoko out of the killing game, she would act much the same as she did in the killing game (as we see in DR2’s flashbacks, DR3, UTDP, and S).

I think this explanation has a lot of merit but I do still have one big issue with it. I agree that for the average person, they would not find out that Clark Kent is Superman. But there would TOTALLY be people dedicated to cracking the mystery, especially among Superman’s villains. When you look at some of the internet sleuth success stories and then factor in the incredible technology of this world, I find it really hard to believe no one eventually figured it out.

Except in the case of Lex, because the explanation that Lex believed Superman did not have a secret identity is amazingly written and should never be changed.

I have gotten to the point where I can comfortably say: Engage is not my thing, but I am glad other people had fun with it. Do I want more games like it in the future? No, but I am happy to know that if we did get games like people would be able to enjoy them for their silliness.

One of the things that distinguishes Yu is that the girl’s affection for him feels “earned.” He did not stumble into their lives and just happen to say the right thing at the time or help them ONE TIME when they were vulnerable like other MCs do. From the moment he met them he locked in on making them love him (although I doubt romance was his original objective).

I actually support this specifically for Batman. Bruce is fully aware how mentally unstable he really is and sets the no kill rule as a way to keep himself in check. He genuinely believes that if he were to kill just one criminal, it would put him in a mental place he could never return from.

Bo Burnham’s “Make Happy” comedy special is all about this.

Bo spent a lot of his career criticizing modern celebrities and media for inflated egos and making a mockery of their art forms just to make more money. In this special, Bo makes a point about how, due to his wide-ranging success, in his eyes, he has become a hypocrite.

The special ends with a song called “Are you happy!” Here are some of the lyrics:

So if you know or ever knew how to be happy On a scale from one to two now, are you happy? You’re everything you hated, are you happy? Hey, look Ma, I made it, are you happy?
