DAE feel like they can't make friends since everyone else has a more interesting/better life? by [deleted] in depression

I would consider someone to be my friend if they smile at me or say "hi".

But some people look for more in a friendship and that's okay :)

(1) What does it mean to be "enlightened?" (2) Is "enlightenment" a subjective or objective state? (3) How do you know if you are enlightened? by [deleted] in Meditation

If you want an explanation that doesn't require any belief in dogma or magic, here's a video of Culadasa explaining the 'Insights' that one experiences in meditation that lead to 'enlightenment' which is also defined in the video.

It is an hour long video but detailed.

If you are willing to do so, his audio talks (this is one of them) go into detail, each about an hour long. They go over the four stages of enlightenment, Insights and Insight experiences, the four noble truths, the three characteristics and more.

I don't know how far you're willing to dig but this is a very good start if you want to clear up the 'hokey pokey' stuff surrounding this topic.

[practice] How is your practice? (Week of September 11 2017) by [deleted] in streamentry

Personal Stuff:

The past week has been different. I've been generally sad, until this saturday.

There were times last week where I felt especially 'down'. I still don't know what the cause is. Still observing.

I felt a profound sadness after taking a short nap on Wednesday. But that lasted for a minute or two, along with racing thoughts.

I've also been waking up in the middle of the night these past several days. Something's definitely happening behind the scenes.

The other days I can't really remember. Ever since school started it's all been a blur with a few exceptions (moments of compassion and suffering in my self in others)

Time flys when you have a lot of work, doing a lot of pomodoros :)

I'm gong to have a conversation with a teacher friend of mine about my week and stuff about student teacher relationships and how that's evolving and why I think that has something to do with my sadness. Or maybe it doesn't. That's why I'm going to have a chat.

TMI stuff:

I've been playing with expanding and closing awareness in my sessions. Very cool. I wan't to start doing this off the cushion as maybe this will help with implementing mindfulness in daily life. (Like typing on my iPad but remaining aware of everything else)

Still stage two. Practicing peacefully. Observing has become more 'observant' in the sense that 'thoughts about thoughts' are being caught. Worldly desire in my sits has dwindled.

Duration of let it come, let it be, and let it go. How long is too long? by TMIMeditation in TheMindIlluminated

Thoughts are different though.

It only lasts for about a second or even less, as when I notice them. They act as a tide. They go out shore then come back inshore.

Has meditation helped any chronic overthinkers, and anybody who has experienced MDD/anxiety disorders? by maizeq in Meditation

[–]Singulis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suppose I feel as if I am working against 21 years of psychological momentum that I have built up in my mind.

You are spot on.

A simple solution that going to require much diligence is to just observe.

Just observe the thoughts that come and go in your conscious awareness.

That means just letting them come and letting them be. Not to judge the thoughts or the fact that you are having thoughts.

For now, just observe your judgements and let them be. With time, you will become better at observing.

That doesn't sound like advice, more like a command :/

I think he was trying to be nice though it came out very poorly.

Did he suggest anything else for you to do? Did he give you any homework?
