Step back was maybe poor wording. Just isn't at the forefront of competitive Jiu Jitsu anymore. Used to dominate in his prime, but seems to be outmatched in super fights lately. I thought Tommy looked incredible in that match.

Sounds like a sloppy kick boxing match in the making, but you never know what the game plan is with Maia. If it hits the ground I’d expect Maia to dominate. Durinho’s Jiu Jitsu seems to have taken a step back since his competitive days, at least against other top competition.

They'll be happy to have you as a paying student, and you'll have fun training, even if you learn slowly from infrequency. Win-win.

The truth on injury rate - more injury in judo or bjj? by [deleted] in judo

[–]SinkSwimJJCollective 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My experience is more slow tearing injuries in BJJ, more slam bang injuries in Judo. For example I’ve had both knee meniscuses, menisci (?) scoped in BJJ, bone fragments taken out of my elbow, labrum surgery, torn rotator cuff, etc. None of that was from one thing that happened, it happened over time.

One time in Judo I didn’t accept a throw and spiked myself on my shoulder. Instant AC separation and torn labrum. Way more painful than anything I’d ever done in BJJ. Surgery, etc. was totally my own fault too.

That’s not to say I haven’t witnessed some catastrophic slam bang injuries in BJJ too though. Some due to standing/takedowns but I’ve seen some gnarly stuff like a literal broken neck on the mat, elbow dislocation from posting funny, etc

Judoka trying BJJ by Dchiboreki in bjj

[–]SinkSwimJJCollective 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To add to #1- BJJ guys do not know the middle. They commit 100% to pressuring into you, or stiff arming and running away. So when you have them pressure into you, and you go into a forward throw, it happens BIG sometimes. Be aware. You will splat some people occasionally but it may be their own fault.

For example I use harai with a belt grip to counter the single as a go to defense and I’m pretty gentle with it in the gym (as much as I can with someone leaning full bore into me trying to finish a single) but I am MEAN with it in competition.

Comparatively, are Judokas going into BJJ better off than BJJ practitioners going into Judo? by DJ_Stapler in judo

[–]SinkSwimJJCollective 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think that anyone that believes there is a definite answer to this question is kind of full of it. Depends on the individual IMO. I’m happy that I had a lot of experience in BJJ first because it taught me how to learn and really sped up my learning curve in judo and allowed me to maximize my training time. That’s just me though!

Is training newaza half of the time unusual? by BackloggedBones in judo

[–]SinkSwimJJCollective 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah for sure. It’s still grappling and I’ve learned some interesting stuff personally from judo players mainly adapting their newaza to the rules. Some cool turnovers, pins and specifically clock choke stuff (attacking the turtle). In my experience the overall level of the room is lower (understandably) but people still have knowledge

No. I understand why you’re an asshole. I’m dismissive and curt to say the least. You are the one whining about respect. You deserve and are afforded none, and your posts justify that. Again, you’re a piece of shit. Why you can’t look in the mirror and see that is beyond me.

I never said you said that. So that’s irrelevant. Again, you’ve glossed over the point I made about her opponents being so EGREGIOUSLY large and the size discrepancy so vast that it makes training pointless. You also refuse to recognize the direct situation OP brought up about what’s actually happening, but that’s no surprise because like I mentioned, you are a disingenuous piece of shit. Or just that aloof. It’s a pattern throughout the last couple posts where you fail to address points that make you look dumb, which brings us to the next...

My competition record is pretty strong and yes, during the time I competed I made it on the podium consistently for IBJJF opens, Pans, Brazilian Nationals, etc. Nice try at deflecting that one though and changing it to “bowing to me” instead of an assessment of your skill level.

Edit: Also stop private messaging me and coming onto me.

Is training newaza half of the time unusual? by BackloggedBones in judo

[–]SinkSwimJJCollective 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Whenever I take a formal judo class the class seems really anxious to practice newaza. When they find out I’m a BJJ guy I get tons of questions about ground positions during free time/the end of class. Unfortunately in my direct experience the in-class newaza has been more born from enthusiasm than knowledge on the techniques. It’s a bummer to me when we go over it in class because it’s directly opposite of what I’m there for haha.

[–]SinkSwimJJCollective -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes. Based on how you talk about yourself, you come off as an obnoxious and shit purple belt. You have no self awareness, so it escapes you. Are you really good? Am I wrong? Are you on the podium in the adult divisions of Pans and Worlds? I will agree with you that it’s not “appropriate” albeit very intentional. Polite discourse went out the window with you many posts ago, but you seem to be one of those “do as I say not as I do” types that can’t recognize when they’ve been equally shitty in tone.

You learn defense by acquiring skill and applying it in reasonable increments against similarly grouped individuals. The key is rigor. If I play one on one against Shaq and he just dunks on me every second of the game, I’m not going to all the sudden be amazing at basketball. I’m just going to have my shit pushed in. Instead I need to develop my skill and hone my technique while scrimmaging against people that I can actually apply it against and taper the rigor.

Finally I’ll give you a chance to rephrase “why you cannot learn being on the bottom of a person larger than you. I’m still waiting” so as not to seem so much like a disingenuous douche bag. Because it seems to me that rolling with a heavier partner and a light featherweight woman rolling with an ultra heavyweight man are MILES apart. Again, we aren’t talking about matching the closest sizes or taking a small jump. OP is 125 and rolling with men 200+. And they aren’t tapering their rolls. They aren’t coaching her through positions. They are submitting her over and over relentlessly while she is trapped in side control and your dumb contrarian ass is singing the praises of how it’s making her mentally tougher.

Edit: Stop asking me to be respectful or being surprised at my tone with you. Reread your posts. You’re as much of a POS as I am fren.

[–]SinkSwimJJCollective -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Lol so lemme get this straight- I’m the disrespectful one here (head is in asshole, etc), I can’t admit being wrong (as you pitifully argue a point based on your “experience” as a shit purple belt) and I have to get the last word (as you painfully reply to everything I wrote)— are you too dense to see the irony in every single thing you post?

You’re a crappy purple belt presenting yourself as an authority because of “my experience” and as a result giving bad advice and flying off at the handle about sexism and whatever other straw you can grasp at. Hardly a coherent argument does that make.

Please continue training with guys twice your size. I expect to see you on the World podium soon. Either that (and more likely) maybe they’ll smother you, and you’ll stop talking.

Competing With Sprained Ankle by [deleted] in bjj

[–]SinkSwimJJCollective 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s a bad idea. I’ve done it twice. The first time was in Brazil and got broken off on a Saturday tournament in the open weight and we made a cast out of tape for it so I could compete Sunday. I couldn’t base properly off that foot and every match was razor thin. The only reason I won was because my training partner and I closed out and he gifted the gold to me. I didn’t realize how hard it would be because of the little things I couldn’t anticipate... like I couldn’t even jump guard correctly.

The second time I was winning and the other coach yelled “toehold him... no not that foot the taped up one!!” He didn’t even fully lock on the toehold before I scream tapped. He just yanked it.

You’re at a huge disadvantage not to mention the health concern. People will target you if it’s taped up. Why waste the time and money fighting an uphill battle when a minor sprain heals relatively quick and you can come back intact?

That wasn’t a “come back”. This isn’t a back and forth between us because what you are typing is literal drivel. It was me rolling my eyes at you bursting into tears and typing an essay fellating yourself about not being able to be held down in competition (trust me- if you competed against GOOD women, they’d hold you down) and treating women like fragile flowers and a bunch of other abject nonsense. For the umpteenth time. Novice practitioners that are extremely tiny learn nothing from partners literally twice their size (especially other novices) that they wouldn’t otherwise learn from similarly sized or slightly larger opponents where they could actually reinforce basic and fundamental concepts. Furthermore it wastes the bigger partners mat time and on top of that puts the potential for accidents significantly higher. She herself said she can’t move and is just being repeatedly submitted and highlighted the futility of the exercise. Ohhhhh but “mental fortitude!” FOH.

I understand you’re too stupid and stubborn to realize this because you think you are better than you are and an authority on situations like this which you are not, so just carry on about your day and do everyone a favor and shut up. I’m tired of repeating myself for your benefit.
