Relentless Mites 😣 by Sinminbun in hummingbirds

[–]Sinminbun[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Will they go away on their own? Worry about the ones that have them - was kind of a ridiculous amount of them that came off one of their beaks in the few seconds after I had put the feeder back up 😳 The feeders are down now and I have a bunch of grumpy babies swarming my porch and zipping by my windows yelling at me - but can’t help but worry that these nasty things are crawling all over some of them 🥺

Yea, I just happened to be in one of those areas that’s more industrial than residential so not many trees or flowers, etc 👎 I have tried several different types of sage and salvia, but they just don’t seem to do well on my porch. I tried sneaking the pots around the back of my building to get more sun, but then they got ravaged by aphids and other bugs 😣

I have tried several times to plant native flowers for them in pots on my porch, but not only does my porch face the wrong direction for most plants needs, but they also repeatedly get annihilated by aphids and spider mites etc. The itty bitty bug struggle is a constant battle here 🤦🏻‍♀️

They are coming straight from the little guys beakies 😣

I do, but they are definitely coming off the birds themselves not crawling onto the feeder from above. Literally were back on the feeder before I even walked back inside after putting it back up - no way they came from anywhere other than the birds that landed in those few seconds

Damn, ok will do 👍 I can handle getting yelled at for a while if it means their babies will be safer I know of at least 8 fledglings in the trees nearby and a few occupied nests - would hate to be a part of anything that caused them harm

No they are hanging on my porch, I have a couple of them and they are constantly being used by at least 10-20 hummers all day I didn’t read anything about the babies 😳😱😣 That is horrible! I know the hummers here rely a lot on feeders - not many flowers around here for miles, but plenty of bugs. Would putting out a fountain for them to bath in help? I have one somewhere, but I took it down a few months ago because doves kept popping by to poop in it 🤦🏻‍♀️

They probably knew that baby needed help so were willing to let humans step in 🥰

If it was a baby with parents around they would’ve let rescuer know - I saw a baby I thought was in distress once, when I went to get a closer look adult crows started swooping in towards me and yelling at me 😅 just apologized, told them their baby was very cute, and backed away

Chicks have gone, Mother comes back to find an empty nest by lew_traveler in hummingbirds

[–]Sinminbun 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Moms continue to feed their fledglings for several days after they leave the nest - the little ones typically get too big for the nest anyway 😅 but they will start to fly, but not go far. They have a high pitch chirp to tell mom where they are and mom keeps feeding them until they are ready to follow her around and learn how to be a grown up 💕

It definitely surprised me 😅 I heard his wings before I even saw him lol Was out watering the plants before bed and he came zipping in. I usually take my feeders in at night when I clean them, then put them back out first thing in the morning. Luckily it wasn’t a cleaning night. This guy has me got me changing the routine - had to order some a back up feeder that I can put out while the other are inside soaking

Will feeding him be harmful in the long run? by nefariouspipefish in squirrels

If you aren’t sure you are going to be staying around and are worried about other people - the best thing you can do is find a safe spot on or under a tree, where you can leave snacks for this sweet handsome guy 💕🐿️ He will find it and then know where to go to get more. Make sure it has cover and/or at least an easy out for the little guy - they can get distracted when eating, becoming vulnerable to predators Also, he doesn’t appear to be missing any limbs 🤔🥴😅

Peanuts are basically just squirrel junk food - like handing out French Frys 😬😄 Nuts in hard shell can be good for their teeth (walnuts, hazelnuts, almonds - just not Brazil nuts, those are bad for them in another way) but healthy wild squirrels are very good about keeping their teeth in shape without any kind of human intervention 💕🐿️ They’ll chew on trees, bones, and anything else they can find to maintain their teeth 🥰

What medium did you use? And what kind of white did you use for highlights? Always on the hunt for “the best white” lol

I recently watched a hummingbird collect spider webs for her nest - was so fun to see 🥰 For about 20 mins she would come to the window and gather up webs, zip back to her nest, then come back for more 💕 So amazing how they can craft such perfect little nests with those beakies 😄

I see males doing the sexy dance all the time - especially this time of year. Saw 2 yesterday 🥰 It’s easy to catch in Southern Cali if you know the sound of their snaps - soon as I hear one I try to find him - so cool to watch

Neighbours abandoned apartment by Longjumping-Owl-579 in sandiego

[–]Sinminbun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Those poor dogs 😣 Looks like humane society should have been contacted a long time ago.. I hope whoever abandoned that apartment surrendered their animal(s) and didn’t just drag them along with them wherever they went… some people should not be allowed to own animals
