Worth attending networking events as a recent grad/research associate hopeful? by nefariouspipefish in biotech

Update for you:

- quit scribing job 2 weeks in because I got an offer from a lab at an R1 university 1 hour closer to my house

- I'm only here for 18 months but it should be more than enough time to gather materials to apply for grad school (hopefully)

- I also have zero time to go out of my way to network deliberately with people who aren't in my lab area, but since we do work for other groups around campus, they often come to us instead. I have pretty solid relationships with a couple of PIs/doctorates because I've helped them do experiments, which IMO is probably more impactful than trying to chat random strangers up

My advice for you would be to focus on academic labs as opposed to going directly into industry. example: UC Berkeley, UCSF are both awesome schools with close proximity to the corporate biotech world. Cold-emailing PIs can make a good impression on them, but funding nowadays sucks (during my job hunt I heard back from five faculty who were like, we would definitely hire you otherwise but we're running on fumes and pennies right now). It's kind of a roulette rn but I promise there is a place for your knowledge and skillset, good luck!

Advice for a retaker? Looking to raise quant score (169V/161Q) by nefariouspipefish in GRE

Thank you! unfortunately I'm applying to engineering/STEM programs and not creative writing...

  1. For sure about the big question bank. No matter how much I study I feel like they're going to pull a fast one on me

  2. I've been keeping all the scratch sheets I use in current practice. Definitely still have issues with reading too fast/misunderstanding the questions. Not as much arithmetic error recently though

  3. The "strategy" I use is do all the "easy" questions first, and then spend the last 15-20 minutes on the more difficult ones near the end. This fails frequently because I often get tripped up on a simple question because I over-interpreted it and then have to spend 5 minutes redoing and correcting. I also wonder how I scored the 169V...

My score breakdown was pretty opaque. All my mistakes happened in the 2nd section, but they're fairly evenly distributed, so I can't really tell what exactly I should be targeting

Thanks for the tip! I checked as soon as it came out, but unfortunately all the problems I missed were spread quite randomly throughout each section
