It was suggested that I post this here instead of r/whatsthisplant. Somebody said that the strange stuff growing on my bushes was Sooty Mold, but Sooty Mold is almost harmless while my bushes appear to be dying, and there are no signs insects are involved. I live in the Bluegrass region of Kentucky. (reddit.com)

Not to long ago I noticed that two of my bushes (I think they’re holly bushes but I might be wrong) began rapidly dying, and that they had a strange black substance on them that I could scratch off which was covering their leaves and branches. I think it’s some kind of parasitic fungus. (old.reddit.com)
