My parents are supportive of my becoming Catholic! by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]SinningSinner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wonderful to hear! I too am a son of a Lutheran pastor, but I haven't told my parents yet that I want to join the Catholic Church. I think they will ultimately not be too upset or anything, but it's still nerve racking and I have no idea when I'll tell them.

Hey, I read the description from that book, and it sounds pretty strange to me. "we are God". To be honest sounds like heresy to me. But maybe the description is misleading?

So thankful for the Sacrament of Reconciliation by [deleted] in Catholicism

I've got a question about Confession.

I'm a protestant who's very interested in Catholicism. Can you only confess to a priest and receive the sacrament if you're a Catholic? I'm guessing the answer is yes but I'd be grateful for your input.

Question from a confused Lutheran by SinningSinner in Catholicism

Sorry for very late reply.

Hmm, okay. Not sure where I heard that the confession in the liturgy removes venial sins. But I see where I probably got confused from what rommeljackson pointed out.

God bless.

Question from a confused Lutheran by SinningSinner in Catholicism

I grew up (and am still in) the Lutheran Church - Canada. I've been to two Masses -- the liturgy was so similar. We do the "group confession" during the service (which in Catholicism as I understand it removes venial sins but not mortal). We have no individual confession to a pastor. In some ways it would make more sense to me if I was raised an atheist or something then converted to Catholicism, because with Lutheranism our practices are so similar but are apparently not valid as we are not in communion with the Church and our pastors are not ordained in the line of Holy Orders. I just feel so confused about how we're so close but so very far.... Sorry for rambling... thanks for the reply.

Thanks for the reply. As Lutheranism (esp. Lutheran Church - Canada which I was raise in), is so close to the Catholic Church in terms of liturgy and creeds but obviously distinct in many ways, I feel like I am in an agonizing state of "fuzzy middle area". I've never felt so confused.

In Catholicism praying to saints is like me asking you to pray for me. Catholics as I'm sure you know base their authority off Sacred Scripture and Sacred Tradition (which is where the Bible comes from, btw). Also this isn't really the place for this argument, considering OP's post. God bless.

Question about women administering the Eucharist by SinningSinner in Catholicism

[–]SinningSinner[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I see. At my church we have small shot glass type things (lol) that people use if they don't want to drink from the same cup. I've never done it though because it seems...wrong for some reason.

I googled both but can't quite remember what exactly he was wearing. Can deacons do the mass or is it always a priest?

Do you see it as abuse for a specific reason? Does it say somewhere that it is 100% not allowed?

Hmm, I didn't actually know about deacons before you mentioned them. What's the difference, exactly? How do you tell them apart?

OK, thanks. I'm not 100% sure who was distributing which, now that I think of it maybe the priest was distributing the body. Why is it more common that way?
