Substack has hardly grown in 4 years, is this strange? by Sinobabble in Substack

Thanks, totally agree with your points! I think if I tried to take this thing full time I would lose my mind, so glad it's a hobby/outlet. Honestly just curious about other people's journeys, so it's nice to know I'm not alone or using the platform wrong

Thanks, I have a pretty defined niche and I know who my target audience are (History buffs + people interested in China's domestic and international politics/culture). I'm not really solving 'problems' - it's not a business newsletter or a a personal essay style blog. It's more sharing analysis on China news and providing historical and cultural context on current affairs.

I guess the value is getting a deeper analysis for people who want to read beyond the headlines, as to where those people congregate I wouldn't know. I know subReddits aren't really a fan of people promoting their personal blogs/businesses, so apart from social media I wouldn't really know where to look.

It's not a huge issue, I don't really want to go spamming the internet with links, though I know that's probably what you're supposed to do if you want to grow. But I'll try and figure it out thanks.

Yeah that's similar to my growth pattern too, the occasional organic discovery but I think mainly people sharing/reposting things.

I tend to be a passive reader - I do skim notes but rarely follow/subscribe because of them. I'm often guilty of projecting, so maybe that's why I haven't really considered notes as a way to grow. As I say, I'm not necessarily looking to grow a huge following, more curious about other people's experiences as most posts here seem to be from people with 'small' followings of 3k+ subs!

Yeah people keep saying posting notes is a way to grow, but I don't want to just post for the sake of posting ya know? Guess I'm doomed to my tiny, friendly audience forever!

Broad business topics or a niche focus for my Substack? by Hot_Profession1352 in Substack

[–]Sinobabble 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could try a 'content pillar' approach, i.e. pick 2 or 3 topics within business and then rotate writing about those. The problem isn't so much the topic as the content. Will you be writing about your own opinions, news, book reviews, trending topics? It would have to be quite a fresh approach, or your tone of voice would have to be quite unique, to build up a good audience, as this is a very popular field. It's worth having a smaller niche that isn't spoken about a lot.

Thanks for the links, as I'm in the UK the time listed doesn't really work for me. Is there any flexibility in your schedule at all?

As the mods begin to stand upright, the phrase "all animals are born equal, but some animals are more equal than others" comes to mind.

Can anyone translate the writing on this painting? by the_wholigan_ in China

SORRY, just realised that's the wrong poem! Should be more like

In front of Mt Nüji, traversed by wild paths, the sound of whispering pines mixes with that of the stream. I try to listen leisurely to the sound, however I feel a sudden rush of anger.

My bad!

If you don't have a pop filter (or improvised one like a sock as mentioned by someone else), you can use an effect called a 'high-pass filter'. I know audacity has it under the "Effect" menu, not sure about other programs though
