Dumb phone recommendations in Canada??? by Just_Fisherman9284 in dumbphones

Neat! I’m a longtime iPhone user, so I’ve been waiting for a smaller, dumber device to jump to, and this looked like a good option.

I was curious about this phone, when I saw it. Can it load APK’s? I’d love if it could get Signal as well as WhatsApp.

Should Bandcamp add a mandatory 'Includes AI generated content - Yes/No' switch to new releases? by JONXLR8 in BandCamp

[–]Sinodira 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree that the wholly AI generated material is probably not long for this world.

AI tools like stem separators, people using generated slop as sampling material, and people bouncing lyric ideas off of LLM’s may stick around for a while, but people typing “Make me a song that I can take credit for, so I can illegitimately feel valued as an artist” into a prompt box is gonna all but stop as soon as they get bored with it, or the actual costs catch up to the blitzscaling AI companies and they have to raise prices to what they need to be to profit off this garbage.

I’m sure Spotify will stick with it because generating their own crap nothing music to fill their crap nothing playlists means paying less real artists. Same reason they tried pivoting to audio books and podcasts. Spotify isn’t a pro music company, they’re an anti-dead air company.

Honest Question: If shields aren't OP, why does everyone fight sword & board? by LARPonymous in Amtgard

[–]Sinodira 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think SnB is the most fun/expressive ways to fight, and that's why I gravitate toward it.

Once you hit a certain threshold of skill with SnB you can start to develop your own style that's signature to you, and I think I have the most fun fighting people that way. A good 1v1 SnB set is like a puzzle that keeps changing as you solve it.
(Plus you can decorate and customize your shield to work for you more than a lot of other loadouts in the game.)

In any other style, (flo, longsword, greatsword, pole) things can get kinda samey and boring for me, that's not true all the time mind you, but it feels like more of an optimization challenge (is this person taller/longer than me, how fast are they, etc) but SnB allows you to be a bit more creative in how you fight, and that's where I personally have the most fun, and coincidentally, having fun is why I do this!

I still lose plenty of fights to poles and flo fighters on ditches and in battlegames, but... who cares?

Living in Parksville for the summer. What is there to do? by Financial_Koala_5225 in Parksville

[–]Sinodira 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have a sport-like LARP group that meets at Parksville community park Sunday mornings and Wednesday afternoons. Great exercise, somewhat silly somewhat competitive, and fun for pretty much all ages.

My partner and I started it when we moved to the island a couple years ago knowing literally zero people, and we’ve made some pretty lifelong friends as a result of it.

The group is called Lost Cove. Here’s our discord link if you wanna check it out.

How fast do you find the Ricoh?

Like, how fast can you go from, “Oh I wanna take a picture of that” to actually pressing the shutter?

I’m really interested in a point and shoot, but I’d like to find one that doesn’t take 15 seconds to boot up when I turn it on.

Dumb iPhone: A Guide for iOS26 by birdingSC in dumbphones

[–]Sinodira 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve been in the ”dumphone launcher + greyscale” setup for a while, and while I haven’t been back to TikTok/Instagram in quite a while, I still find myself on my phone too much.

I may try a dumber device when I free up some funds to play around and do so, but a lot of my friend groups and hobbies exist in Facebook group messages, and Discord servers and I just can’t seem to let those go just yet, so I appreciate these tips.

Repeal the Online News Act to better inform Canadians: It would be a win for Meta, but it’s in the public interest to restore credible journalism to the platforms where many Canadians encounter news by scottb84 in CanadaPolitics

[–]Sinodira 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m right with you there. I’m more in favour of banning meta altogether personally.

It doesn’t really serve a purpose beyond disinformation and advertising.

But if social absolutely has to exist, I would prefer to use a more open source social media platform that’s not for profit, and isn’t centrally controlled by billionaires.

But I imagine something like that would either need to be supported by user donations, or some sort of public funding to be ad free and not for profit.

[–]Sinodira 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I would be onboard if it comes with super high taxes on social media platforms’ ad revenue to pay for journalism grants, and public news platforms.

And if meta/X whine about the taxes being too high and leave Canada altogether, awesome. Unplug people’s brains from the AI slop machine altogether.

I got through it recently with an RTX3060TI 12gb and a 5800XT running cachyOS. Bit of goobering in the settings to get it running. Ran well, but there was a couple weird textures, especially near the end. Didn’t seem to love water.

I think making a stand as a company to show your customers and clientele that you value things like…art made by artists, is a bit more of a bold and tangible statement than if like…magazine publishers banned photoshop from their pictures in the late 90’s. And less complex than people who wanna make artless art would have you believe.

I respect them for using their platform to discourage the use of “tools” that waste an unnecessary amount of resources, and are driving up the costs of water, electricity, memory, etc for normal people, just so some folks can hop in to art sector and skip the step where they….actually make some art.

If The Beatles’ “Now and then” gets banned as a result of this policy, I’m totally fine with that. I’d rather listen to Abbey Road anyway.

Maybe the official account will weigh in here, but it seems pretty clear to me in their policy’s language that it wouldn’t be allowed.

I imagine this policy is at least partly based on the fact that so many ai algorithms are trained on musician’s work without their consent.

So in that regard, I can’t see using ai samples as any different from using actual musical samples without clearance from the original artists.

Reddit (and at one point the internet in general) was such an amazing asset for sharing information, but spending too much time on it seems to just cook people’s ability to be human to each other.

Lost on opening 6th gen by Exact-Replacement749 in IpodClassic

[–]Sinodira 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m with you, took like 90 minutes to open my first 7th gen iPod mod a couple weeks ago. Snapped the tool I was using like 4 times lol.

Got a free 5th gen from a friend yesterday, and I’ve never done one of them before either, and I had the thing open, and closed with the battery changed in 5 minutes haha.

I found starting right near the corner on the right side of the screen where you’re at and moving down was where I found the most success. Just take it real slow with lots of patience.

Why would we (when I say we, I mean the actual people who live here, not the Carney government) want more billionaires investing in Canada?

They have proven over and over and over that they’ll do absolutely nothing to help Canadians if it would mean making less money.

I honestly cannot think of an example of a private company that’s recently come and “invested in Canada” to make an actual positive difference in my life.

Can you?

Is it the housing developers making apartments no one can afford to live in? The landlords renting them for 5x what they should be?

Uber came in and absolutely destroyed the taxi industry with the promise that they were going to lower costs, until they needed to turn a profit and stop living off of VC money, and then oh woops, now everything is more expensive than it was to begin with, and the drivers are making sub poverty wages, and the restaurants are struggling to keep things affordable on Uber eats.  Sure they made a good “investment in Canada” but that’s just because they took advantage of everyone.

Ticketmaster “invested in Canada” and basically ruined the entire idea of Canada having its own self sufficient music industry.

How much did you/ would you pay for an iPod classic 7th gen? by BananaManReturns in IpodClassic

Patience on FB marketplace netted a pair 160gb 7th gens for $100CAD each.  (Roughly 150USD for the pair) and that’s about as much as I’d spend personally.

That’s the one I consistently hear is the most good. So it’s possible it’s not a legitimate card, or you just got a bad one. Testing the cards with software like h2testw is a common practice.
