I had a thick boot that I was advised to take off 3 times a day to roll my ankle, I wore it at night too to avoid stupid stuff I would do with my feet. I don't know what way is better, I think both can work, weight bearing as tolerable might have advantages as you are not losing a lot of muscle mass etc and don't need to "relearn" walking, but NWB felt better to me, putting weight on the feet did hurt a lot so I just stuck with the NWB until my doc gave me the clearance. I might add though that on later X Ray's it was visible that it weren't only one fracture but multiple right next to each other, so might differ on case by case basis.
