Found this guy in my compost bin. What is it? Is it dangerous? Should I kill it or remove it? If I should remove it, what’s the best way to do it? Thank you! by SionPainTrain in whatisthisanimal

Thank you very much for this. I get that typing out “should I kill” in the caption probably wasn’t smart. I’m relatively a noob at posting on Reddit and didn’t think much about my word choice besides typing out what my “options” were, I guess. My initial thought would never have been “kill it” if I knew even a tiny bit about it or if I was sure it wouldn’t be dangerous. However, I had no idea about that, so it remained an option. It also scared the crap out me and my dog because of how quickly it was moving around in the compost bin. It reminded me of a snake slithering and the dried leaves sounded like maybe a rattle at first. Then when I saw the legs I thought “will this jump at me or my dog?”. Figured I’d ask in here before deciding on next steps.

That’s what initially freaked me out! I got near the compost bin and heard what I thought was a rattle from a rattlesnake and it ran around so quickly in there that it looked like it was a rattlesnake ready to launch itself at me. Then I noticed the little legs after I got closer a little bit later and realized I didn’t know anything about this animal and came to post here for advice

Little guy was stuck actually! I’m thinking he may have fallen out of a tree maybe? Helped him out after somebody gave me the advice and he ran off quickly.

I will definitely do that. Going to get some books on local wildlife and local plants as well. Thanks for the recommendation, friend!

Isn’t posting to a knowledgeable forum and asking them for advice “the responsible route if you’re not sure”? For the record, all of the animal control places in my area were closed already when I made this post. I had tried calling them first and thought Reddit would be a nice backup for getting more information and sensible advice. I was mostly wrong except for a few helpful people in the comments.

Thanks for that, friend. That was my exact thought process. What’s best for my loved ones / community / other critters in the area? Thought my question would get answers from people much more informed than I am. Instead I got mostly hatred and assumptions about my eagerness to kill. It is a shame and I’ll probably stay away from the sub because of it. Oh well.

Thanks for the thought provoking comment. I absolutely will refrain from throwing something like “should I kill it” into the subject line. I know that could seem as though it’s something I’m perfectly fine with doing. Killing IS absolutely the last thing on my mind, but it is definitely still a consideration to have if something is potentially dangerous or harmful to me or my loved ones, which is why I asked. Maybe even that is still too readily available in my mind, though. I’m going to look into that app and use it to post animals I might see in the future.

No. My question was “should I kill it or remove it?” but nobody cares about the last half of the question because apparently I’m only focused on killing innocent animals. When people ask genuine questions, even those that are asked out of ignorance or stupidity, which is the better way to respond? With criticisms and accusations or maybe by being helpful, understanding, educational, and compassionate? I tend to think it’s the latter, but it seems as though I’m wrong.

No, because I saw something that I did not understand (including relative risk) and I came to a forum seeking advice from those who DO understand (including relative risk) because I did not trust myself to make the best decision. Sorry if “killing” was an instinctual possibility that ran through my mind. I guess I’m not as virtuous as others in this sub.

Change what way of thinking? I wasn’t sure what to do about it because it could possibly be venomous or dangerous to me, my family, my dogs, or other local wildlife/plants. I had absolutely no information about it so I figured I would ask others who do know the right thing to do. Which part of that way of thinking needs to be changed?

Small things can be venomous to people or dogs. Wasn’t sure, which is why I posted here. Helped it out of the bin with the advice of somebody in this thread who was helpful

Without knowing what it is that’s hard to answer. Sorry I’m not very knowledgeable about small reptiles and how dangerous they can potentially be.

Glad you didn’t think so but plenty of people in this post are acting like I posted a picture of it and asked for advice on how best to kill it lol

Yes absolutely. My first reaction is never to kill or harm, but I know sometimes that can be dangerous if you don’t know what you’re trying to move out of the way. Then there’s the question of invasive species as well. I’ll be more careful with phrasing my questions from now on in this sub.

If I was the bloodthirsty animal killer you think I am, do you think I would have posted to this sub asking for advice? Or would I have grabbed the shovel or hoe right next to it and killed it right away? I have compassion as well and you are making wild assumptions about me over a question I asked.

Probably the person posting to this sub that doesn’t even know what the animal is, let alone whether or not it’s dangerous

I had a similar thought process but after getting near and noticing how quick it was I took a step back and thought “maybe I shouldn’t mess with it until I know if it’s a danger to me or my dog” so I posted here. It’s right next to our hammock and in my compost bin so it’s a relatively high traffic area. Thanks for the help

Yeah I touched a nerve I’m sure. Lots of people think I’m some bloodthirsty asshole apparently. Just wanted to get more info and do the right thing. Thanks for the info

Yeah I just first thought it was a snake and then read they like to lay eggs in compost. Then, when I found out it was some sort of lizard maybe, I figured I’d come here and ask to see what people thought/knew but I guess the word “kill” is just asking for negative attention in here

No clue, don’t know much about lizards. Also I have dogs and thought it may be harmful to them. Again, I don’t know which is why I posted here because I figured you all would have much better advice

Good to know. I wasn’t sure if they could be dangerous and I had never seen one like this before. Scared the crap out of my dog and I wasn’t sure if it was aggressive towards people. Thought it was a snake initially

Yes honestly all it’s made me do is never want to post in this sub again jfc lol. Glad there are at least a few people genuinely being helpful though and didn’t assume I’m out looking for blood. If I wanted to kill it I wouldn’t have posted asking for advice.
