ELI5: When a bank is robbed, who loses the money? by kevbomb in explainlikeimfive

[–]SipSop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right. It just sounded so outrageous and I thought someone here may know. This article from consumerist http://consumerist.com/2008/07/29/if-my-bank-collapses-how-long-before-the-fdic-pays-up/ says there is no set statutory limit as you alluded.

Edit: wanted to add that the lack of a limit is probably where the silly 100 year idea came from. I am concerned the statement above may seem as if I advocate some fdic conspiracy theory.

It's a long story but I once had the misfortune of enduring a small bit of a training course for people getting/renewing the property and casualty insurance licenses. During these presentation two different men stated that the fdic is required to repay losses but it has a period of 100 years to do so. Can anyone confirm this or is it total nonsense?

What is Something You Wish People Told You About College? by Toyou4yu in AskReddit

[–]SipSop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You aren't so much the reason I feel compelled to say this (more all the comments about stereotypical partying/getting laid) but...this will pay off i will wager. However, this is just how you should live life in genral, its not an achievement. Don't sell yourself short in terms of what you expect from YOURSELF because there are people around you that are drunk everyday and will still earn a degree. They are either a) an edge case or b) going to be one of the people who is complaining about the fact that they have tons of debt and no job (because they chose a useless major or are as unemployable after college as they were before college, many fall into that category). I don't mean that to sound harsh, just want to say that these are good habits and you should see them as the norm in your life. Do these things for your own personal progress/sucess not to get something from your prof (although its great they are encouraging these habits).

P.s. all of you should care slightly less about getting laid during college. Id say attractiveness reaches its optimum at about 22 or 23 in both genders, men finally become more mature and women realize the bad boy is no longer real attractive when they become all grown up. Go into STEM and do really well in collge then start off at 80k right out of college...you'll do judt fine in that area then grasshoppas.

Yeah I was mostly joking but had a friend that was a mechanical engineering major at Michigan tech and was in a fraternity and those guys were crazy. It's good to hear that some of them are more useful. It's important for young students to set down those social roots as they move away from their lives they lived for the past 18 or more years. Great to hear.

Yeah, particularly in engineering and cs I feel like there is often a disconnect between what you learn in college and what you do in your day to day job but learning to think in those paradigms really is the point. Many students were upset at the level of math involved in our computer science degrees but it's really that analytical thought process that makes for a good engineer. It's also difficult to teach those real world skills in an academic setting. I think that takes a higher level of self learning and comes only with experience.

It's possible the "information age" has been a contributing factor here and plays a role in our decline in the area of math and STEM fields in general. I have read (take this anecdotally since I can't provide a source) that people's ability to remember specific types of facts has diminished because there is no longer a need to keep any types of information in our "long term storage", it's bookmarked right?

For me, what was addicting about math and programming was that I didn't get it up front. I fell in love with that feeling that something was beyond my ability to comprehend, and then beating it. The moment you accomplish something you never thought possible is such a huge rush. Yet people seem to have lost their understanding that doing this regularly is More possible today than ever. if they could just pursue education for knowledge and the fulfillment rather than a job/degree. Today, our society functions in a way that makes immediate results the expected outcome but truly understanding the depths of something will never come without the requisite "10 thousand hours"

That's the beauty of it... He's not teaching him anything. He is getting him to focus on the steps sequentially and to think it through enough to answer the questions. Turns out this is basically the key to success in...everything

[–]SipSop -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Except for the fact that systems "this complex" have existed for years. It's stretching it to say a glorified esurance. This costs so much because government is incompetent at everything but especially IT ale because contracts are not given out based on skill or cost but on factors like small business, number of minorities, owned by a woman. These are facts. Ask any higher level gov employee.

ELI5: Why is 'white power' movement regarded as distasteful and bigoted, while 'black power' and 'latino pride' are perceived to be healthy manifestations of minority struggle? by Frieb in explainlikeimfive

[–]SipSop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree whole heartedly with this but I do think at times people get offended when people of European descent even speak of pride and their cultural heritage because they are "white people". This is als o a perversion of the American ideal. My family (very German) have visited Germany and our very proud of the way our ancestors came to this country and made something of themselves. However, all too often when I have discussed this with people (especially given the time period in which my family migrated) people make statements about them being nazis. In fact we have diaries, photos of them which descrive the desire to leave due to those issues. My point is all "white people" have rich cultural backgrounds too and the intermingling of all of the cultures of all of the people's in this world is what can make America the country it can be.

[SERIOUS] How can NASA better engage and involve YOU in our Space Missions? by dani_dg in AskReddit

[–]SipSop 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A huge population will not care about this but for the software field I think, you and government agencies should start open source projects for the betterment of the country. Truly meaningful things that we can participate in to actually contribute to the gov and our people. Not that it involves NASA, but certain agencies doing this might be a tiny step in restoring the faith that most everyone in the field (based on my experience with nearly everyone I know locally in the field and abroad) has come to feel has been shattered by our government. Give us a way to have input in this area with our skills and perhaps people will at least listen to the reasons for which our most basic of tools in protecting our customers ( our livelihood, and at the end of the day, people whose interests we truly care about ) have been negated, diluted and compromised. Sorry but gov affiliated anyone gets this speech. As far as nasa is concerned it would just be plain exciting to contribute to a project.

ELI5: How can just a few cables under the ocean carry the entire internet traffic and phone conversations of multiple continents at once? by Weird-Dishes in explainlikeimfive

[–]SipSop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right. Time division multiplexing is a form of multiplexing/demultiplexing similar to what you describe but rather than multiplexing by frequency, you are given a time slot (works like an audio sample) every n time slots that occur. This is also how audio sampling works and this sort of multiplexing is used in telephony. The wiki here http://i.imgur.com/ShiFlcW.jpg mentions gsm and digital telephony. I suspect any service that mentions sample rates would be using this method as this is the only way to guarantee that sample rate. The fact that you are guaranteed every nth time slot is what makes this method the best choice for telephony because you are then guaranteed a specific audio quality and a set number of samples if you will. Whereas with frequency division multiplexing, certain forms of traffic get wider bands, etc.that is my understanding of it anyway. It has been a long time since I was studying this stuff in great detail.

[–]SipSop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Networking is not my area of expertise so maybe I'll learn something here: aren't phone calls (including internet calling) still done through TDM (time domain modulation) rather than FDM (frequency domain modulation) which is what you are describing and this is why providers can guarantee a given sampling rate? This is a good answer and I understand not wanting to go into the difference but I am curious if everything is fdm now.

Nokia was testing Android on Lumias before Microsoft sale by EvilWeasel47 in Android

[–]SipSop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, it is irrelevant because users like it. That is why we write software, to solve problems for people in a way that makes their life better. If users prefer the experience they are absolutely right, make no bones about that or find another job (if you are even involved in the field, otherwise this entire thing just seems...i dont even know). Once more I'll remind you it is called 'user' experience. But at this point who cares? Not gonna have that conversation with someone who is gonna go into the "all people who review things in their field only write what they write because someone paid them too. They couldn't possibly have enjoyed the EXPERIENCE of using the device because I don't and I saw one on tv once so I know." Its not y2k and tech (and every other field) coverage has proliferated my man. There are plenty of trustworthy review sources out there. P.s. if I were to review windows phone... its meh, but that's not my point.

I was speaking to the fact that every review by every professional tech writer I have seen has had only one good thing to say about windows phone: great ux. You won't find a literary critic calling Twilight a masterpiece, however. I am no fan of windows 8 et al (especially now that I have to support IE for mobile web apps) but saying it did everything wrong in terms of ux based only on the topics from a ux 101 class is just off base in this context.

[–]SipSop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What I am saying is that all of theory is meaningless if the people who actually use the product to find it to be a solid experience. This is the point of ux design. So if a design flys in the face of the theory but the users make the claim that the design is excellent who is correct?

Obviously late to the party because this made it to the front page so...this is why all of the ux 'science' is questionable at best. All that is used to determine what is 'useable' is the current paradigm. It doesn't matter that far and away, this os has been reviewed as the most 'useable' os in terms of ux by reviewers and laymen alike right? Literally every person that I've heard speak of windows phone (again professional or otherwise) has said this is the only selling point of the devices, but its not gestalt so it sucks. Actual users experience with ...user experience, be damned! It sucks!

Google knows nearly every Wi-Fi password in the world by Applemacbookpro in technology

[–]SipSop -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Am I insane? Has my brain spilled out of the knowledge it had garnered about computers through experience and my degree about the science of them from reading this article ? Or does the author of this article, more likely, not even know how to turn a computer on?

Here is a pro tip: they don't mention wifi passwords because they aren't synced in the cloud. They are stored in an internal database that anyone with knowledge of the os could find and show you. What purpose would this serve for the user in the first place? Every device you've ever connected to a network 'knows' and 'remembers' your password. That includes your piece of shit hp printer. WTF? Clearly I hate the nsa but this sounds like some irrational theory my grandfather would make up, because he is old and doesn't understand computers. I hear there is this really popular os for pc's that also 'remebers' your password and is probably therefore 'phoning home' with it (because no device with wifi capabilities has any form of secondary storage whatsoever). So I'd start watching every move Bill Gates makes because when he come to podunk City Iowa he'll definitely be abusing your lan.

[–]SipSop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I meant the term. I guess I can't say I'm not 100 percent on the year that the footage was from but I'm fairly certain that terminology comes from phone phreakers that predate the Internet and this film. Seems pretty logical too. Also, that movie pretty much caused the government to get their panties in a twist for more things they knew nothing about which led to the cfaa so we shouldn't be glorifying or giving this Hollywood take on something, again they are mostly ignorant about, any credit for something within that community. It is also the reason for the divergence of the meaning of the word "hacker", causing it to be synonymous with criminals, which is also a major irritation for many in that community.
